Fiddle Box...

I would like to make a "fiddle" box to hold several knives on my desk, within easy reach so I can fiddle with them.

To get some sense of spacing, I made a quick prototype. See photos below. I'm thinking about a small chest with the same foot print, but three drawers and two trays on top. The top would be made of glass.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. I've looked at the Tomway knife display cases in addition to several custom jewelery boxes for inspiration.

Thanks in advance,

- Rick

Roy Underhill makes a spice box on the woodwright shop. The episode is online on the pbs site, but it has a bunch of small hidden releases that you could interpret.

Thanks - That's very interesting. Some incredible woodworkers out there.

I was also thinking about some hidden sliders that make it difficult to open the chest when left unattended. Hidden compartments could be very useful.

If you're interested in a box with "hidden sliders," etc., check out President Thomas Jefferson's puzzle boxes when you have time. They're little known. Might give you some ideas.

Here are some simpler ones:
