along with a silky saw, i kind of like to carry two knives when i go bush,,, one small, one med/large. my small has usually been an esee candiru, and the other a habilis bush tool or bhk essiac

a few months back i managed to get my hands on a Fiddleback Forge Kephart in 3/16,,, and its real nice,,, but thought that my smaller carry needed an upgrade. so,,, i was thinking a Runt in 1/8 would compliment the pointier, thicker blade of the Kephart.

anyhow,,, long story short,,, instead of getting a Runt, i kind of ended up snagging a Bushfinger in 1/8 on the Friday frenzy, and now im thinking about a buddy for it. for this i was thinking an ED Karda in 3/16,,, for the pointier, shorter, stronger blade

i usually carry the smaller blade on me, with the larger knife going in my pack for when i hit camp. do most of you guys carry a combination of blades? are they both similar blade shapes? and what are you opinions on my options?

ill probably decide once the Bushfinger gets here,,, i may not like it,,, bahahahahaha

thanks for any replies

Regarding woods use. I probably carry more steel than I need. The "nessmuk trio" usually applies as my base but I sometimes have an extra knife that I want to play around with. I do think about going lighter and just spending a few weekends with a sax/axe etc or just a small fixed blade - but I enjoy my sharp things.

Axe
4" or therabouts fixed blade
SAK farmer

I'd say that would be my normal woods carry up in the Northeast. The axe is interchangeable with a packable saw, but I find the axe more versatile. I like to have a larger axe with me and most often have one with a 25" handle. A machete works in there too and a 12" machete would get a lot more use from me if I lived further south along the east/gulf coast.

I've have not looked much at smaller fixed blades as I favor a SAK (farmer specifically) and it does all I need it to do. I always have one in my pocket. I would still have it on my person or in a PSK even if I was carrying a small fixed blade.

I have knife ADHD, not as bad as some, but still it has me spending time trying to figure out a fixed blade for my hip. I really like the nessmuk pattern. I am patiently waiting to win the lottery for a nice tapered tang Fiddleback Camp Nessie with a black bolster and a certain burlap handle. Other than that anything would do really. There are finer details in grind/profile that get discussed in great detail but as long as it is a reliable and sharp piece...it'll do.

Check out the nessmuk trio thread for some good combos

Not much these two knives can't handle! The ESEE Junglas and Izula combo I use at times might be more efficient for shelter building, but these are lighter and have the excellent build quality we have come to appreciate from Fiddleback Forge and WAS knives: Optimized by design for beauty and performance.

Featured: A WAS Bison in O1 and a FF Hiking Buddy in CPM154, both with double canvas bolsters and curly oak. I'll do my best to get them out in the field soon.

A silky saw, with either a Bushfinger or Kephart would be well complimented by the Hiking Buddy, Bushboot, 3 finger karda, ED or Bushcraft Karda. Any of those would complete a great trio.

My combos:

Hiking- Bushraptor or Scandi Esquire in a joufuu sheath, large CF sebenza. Diomedes firesteel. I also always carry my emberlit fireant. Cuz why not.

Camp- Camp knife or Duke. Terrasaur in diomedes sheath. SAK and Opinel folding saw. Small stove, typically solo stove.

Car- I always have a HB, generic firesteel, and a SAK in my glove box
