Ever wondered how well the spine of a Fiddleback will throw sparks? Ever wondered how good of sparks a Going Gear Mischmetal rod will throw?

I was sitting out back talking with Lisa earlier and started whittling on an old piece of Cedar. Then I decided to play around a little with timing and let Lisa get in a little camera time. So...using a Going Gear Badger and the Bushfinger I made some sparks. It was kind of comical at times but it really wasn't supposed to be too serious just a timing exercise.

The Bushfinger spine and Going Gear rod definitely make a great team. This spark ignited some leaves, some dry grass and even some of the slivers on the other side of the stick...just not really what I was aiming at...

I find it easier with some fire steels to move the knife and hold the rod still...however for me personally I do better doing the opposite with mischmetal. This spark ignited what I was aiming for, but then Lisa got a little distracted by Alayna climbing a tree so the last shots are a little blurry. As I said it really wasn't supposed to be anything serious anyway...just a little practice. Regardless of the blurry pics I learned the Bushfinger and Going Gear ferro rod will make a great team

Nice stuff! The best spine-striker I have is a Landi MPS, followed by a BRK Fox River. They both worked better than the dedicated strikers GoingGear sells. That said, I do prefer the LMF steels, just cause I find they're easier to direct the sparks into the tinder, whereas I still end up with tinder flying everywhere when I use the misch metal rods, or the sparks don't land where I want them. I'll keep practicing though, the globs they throw sure are cool:D

I like the striker GG sells ok my problem is keeping up with an extra small piece of gear. The blade of a knife is nearly always handy for me, it the spine works I use it, if it doesn't I just use the edge.

It helps if you actually pin the tinder down with the ferro rod when you are moving the knife and not the rod. The tinder won't fly away that way but it still takes practice.

G'day Brian

I'm waiting to see what changes to the handle Andy has in mind before I decide on getting one

Kind regards
Mick

Hi Mick,

Yes I too am curious what changes he made, he said they were very small changes just to keep if from looking so much like the Ladyfinger. He has a batch coming out with some in it soon so I guess we'll see then eh :)

Just realized with the way I am holding it you can't see the handle of the fire steel. It looks like this.
