Spring training is upon us. My Padres are going to be a very different and hopefully more successful team this season. I might not be able to take my Fiddlebacks to the ball park, but they will get plenty of use during summer barbecue season listening to the game on the back patio with a cool drink in one hand and a fine cigar in the other.

Anyone else excited about this season?

Padres should have a good year. Unfortunately, the Braves are not looking too good. They have unloaded almost everyone, including one of your new signees, Justin Upton. And we are still saddled with his brother, who is flat out awful. If B.J. would just go back to the basics at the plate, he could hit at least .280. His hands are lightening quick. But, his stance is awkward and he wants to move his hands all over the map before the pitch. He could learn a lot by watching his brother.

Yeah, I am excited for spring baseball. More so for my kids and being at the ballpark myself, but for the MLB to start up too.

I was thrilled to get Upton, but Padres moved some prospects with a lot of potential for a one year rental. We'll see how this works out for both teams.

I'm pretty busy, so I usually don't start watching until about a month or so before the regular season ends. 160+ games is just too much. However, this year is a bit different- I'm coaching my son's little t-ball team this year. My son and I will be watching from the beginning of the season this year. I look forward to bonding with my son while watching the games like I did with my father. Filling coffee mugs with sunflower seed shells and good bbq should excite my son.

Oh yah, VAMOS GIGANTES!!!!!

My son's t-ball team just happens to the Giants.

Not sure if I noticed before that you are in Sacramento, right in the middle of Giants and A's territory. I took great pleasure in the first 2 Giants WS wins these past several years due to the San Diego connection (Bochy remains one of my all time favorites). Do you get to River Cats games? We went a few years ago on the night they had fireworks for 4th of July. It was only about 105 that day and we sat in the outfield directly in the sun. Haven't been back since.

I've been to a few river cats games. I'm kinda used to the heat now. It's nothing a few beers and a hat can't remedy.

To win in San Diego its always about pitching. That is THE most unfriendly ballpark aside from San Fran and Safeco. I dont think San Diego has the pitching yet to contend.

However, living in San Antone, we have your AA minor league team. Help is on the way....

so lets just get to the way to early WS predictions:

Nationals vs Tigers

Darkhorse Teams: Rangers, White Sox, Pirates, Marlins

Baseball. When I hear it in my head - it's the voice of James Earl Jones. I played baseball since I was 4 and love the game.
Now, my son plays travel baseball so it is close to me from that aspect. His love for the game drives me as well.

If anyone has the chance and you like College baseball - go to Omaha for the College World Series. It is a great event and the energy is electric.

That's my story also. Now, I get more enjoyment watching my son play than I ever got playing the game myself.

I don't follow baseball 1/10th as much as I follow football. But I was born and raised in San Diego and am life long homer for the Padres (and Chargers and Aztecs). Admittedly more of a casual fan as far as baseball is concerned. The off season changes do have me excited and hopeful about the upcoming season.

Pitching has been OK the past few seasons, but we count on career years from guys. The addition of Shields will help, but even team management still seems interested in Cole Hamels (another local kid). We'll see how this season goes. If we had any run production the past few years, we might have contended. Now that we have the potential to score runs, we'll see if the pitching holds up. I am excited about how the Padres have drafted the past few years, but I'm waiting for these can't miss prospects to produce at the major league level.

I'm a transplant to San Diego, been here off and on since the mid 80's when I was attending SDSU. All things San Diego has become my passion. I'm always excited about the Chargers and mad as heck when they fall short. Maybe the Padres will draw you back in this season if they can play exciting baseball.

I will say this. James Shields in Petco = Cy Young contender ala King Felix a few years ago. Awesome stats low number of wins (for a Cy young contender). Offense wont score like they did in KC.

More predictions:
AL Cy Young: Yu Darvish
NL Cy Young: Gerrit Cole (say what??? yeah that just happened)

AL MVP:Jose Abreu
NL MVP:Paul Goldschmidt

Somewhere I have a polaroid pic of myself and Dave Winfield in his original Padre uniform. We attended a baseball clinic at a local college and he was one of the guest speakers. Been a Padres fan ever since, still have a Cub-Buster shirt somewhere from '84.

However, the Mariners are #1 in my heart and are poised to have a good season to follow up on last year.

Baseball on the radio is the sound of summer, at least in my world. Don't always like watching it (the regular season anyways) live but I love listening to it.
