First post..:)

I did a short search but then my add kicked in and I'm hoping for a quicker response. I'm looking for a field carry knife sharpening system or product. Lightweight, compact but useful.

I've volunteered to do some back country forest service work identifying invasive plant species , maintaining fire breaks among other things this winter in Florida.

Anyone have any suggestions ? Thanks and Hi all.

Are you going to be out in the field for an extended period of time?

If it's only for a few days at most, you're better off just buying a nice sharpening system to use at home, and sharpening in between outings. With today's steels, you shouldn't need to sharpen it in the field assuming you started with a sharp edge and didn't mash it into concrete/dirt/rocks/etc.

All that said, a Benchmade field sharpener puts a workable edge back on a knife in short order.
Now with that said, I have not used my field sharpener other than to try it out on a beat up old knife I had.

No matter where I go, there's a Eze-Lap model L in my wallet with most of the plastic handle cut off. It fits in there zipper compartment with no problem and gives me a diamond sharpener where ever I am. For tougher jobs, a small 'carborundum' stone works well with most steels.

I keep a Fine DMT "credit card stone" in my wallet. Haven't ever had to use it but I imagine it would do just fine keeping at least a working edge until I got back to the rest of my equipment.

Second vote on the Worksharp field sharpener, and also: Invest in a good pair of snake chaps.

I carry a Smiths diamond rod sharpener in my hunting pack. Works is fish hooks, serrated edges, and plain edges. It's not gonna out a refined edge in your knife, but in a pinch it will touch up an edge enough that you can use it again.

Work Sharp thirds. I have it and it works well. Also if you need to save even more space the diamond stones are held on by magnets and can easily be removed for large blades (guides can get in the way) or wallet carry.
