hey guys - i'm getting a custom sheath done - and wanted to incorporate a way to keep the blade sharp when out camping and such.

basically what are you using out in the field to touch up your edges?

i'm looking for something that i can attach to the sheath that will not be super bulky and is fairly durable.

thanks

(i know quite a few people are using leather strops - is this the consensus?)

Sandpaper and Tony G's thigh.

This will work, but If he has not waxed lately, you have to be sure to shave a long patch on his thigh first. There in lies the problem, if your only knife is dull!:)

Usually in the field I have a diamond stone with ceramic sticks. Not ideal for my convex edges, but if I really needed it, I could fix her up.

I need to make a portable strop block to handle this in the field.

I recommend the EZ Lap Model M diamond rod. Its compact for carry yet nice to use once its put together and its darn near indestructible. They mount easily on the spine of the sheath with a loop on both kydex and leather sheaths.

When new the diamonds are a bit rough, but after some use they mellow out a bit. I simply used mine for re profiling a couple of knives and it was good to go.

nice thread - I think a water stone and ceramic stone would be perfect. Is there a combo like this

What about a length of leather about 12 inches long with holes on both ends and compound on one side? You could tie it to whatever is handy and strop (old school barber style). in the pack it could be rolled up into a small burrito shaped object.

thanks for all the suggestions - also i'm glad you put up the picture. i was doing a search on eze lap and didnt see that one at first - i was looking at some plastic handled ones - but i think that may fit the bill.

How about spreading some diamond paste on the back of your sheath, and stropping on that? :D Just reapply the compound every once in a while.

a paint stirer with leather on both sides & compound.........i cut them down....very compact........
