Field Knife Sheath - Dangler or Drop Solutions

Hey team, I had the Field Knife out last weekend and it was fantastic. However, I found the stock sheath rode too high for comfort and easy access.

Has anyone else had the same experience, and if so, what dangler / drop solutions have you implemented?

I'm open to home-brew rigging or aftermarket. Unfortunately I don't have any kydex material, and with a Canadian postal strike looming I hesitate to order anything until the situation is resolved. I do have a spare tek-lok.

Any ideas are appreciated!

Look for a user on here by the name of chiral. He has a very inexpensive drop leg kit that's very good quality

Will be interesting to see if that UKE 2.0 does work, I could not figure how to make it fit. [ That's not saying much though, lol]
I prefer dangler sheaths in general, that's why the gso 4.7 sheath with the UKE 2.0 for my FK will probably be my normal woods carry sheath.

I've found the UKE to work great so far, I have two of them

Hole spacing is to far apart on the stock sheaths top 2 holes for proper mounting of the dangler with out a sheath modification.

Lo all,
I actually exchanged e-mails with Hard Knocks about this, realizing that my UKE might not work on the sheath sent out with Nathan's Field Knives.
For those who haven't encountered me, I designed this rig that I called the "universal kydex sheath extension" that was shortened to UKE by a forumite in the S!K subforum. There's a thread with pics and explanations in my sig-line, I'll link it here as well: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...sion-UKE-2-0-leg-straps-and-ferro-rod-holders

The short and sweet of it is that the kit is intended to be a simple, inexpensive, one-size-fits-all solution to user-carry-preference for a wide variety of different knives with kydex/plastic sheaths, particularly those with spacing for a tek-lok - Busse (Mashed Cat, Buy Brown, GodSpeed, 711, Azwelke, Kiahdex, etc.), Survive!, ESEE, Boker, Cold Steel, Buck, Becker, Gerber, SOG, etc. etc. It doesn't fit every model from every company, not by a long shot, but it works for a lot. And it's pretty inexpensive for what you get.

The thing is, I designed it originally to fit Azwelke sheaths with spacing 3/4" o.c. along the side, and it turns out that it fits S!K sheaths (originally designed/manufactured by Kiah) due to the slots.

But to make it more universal, I started including a little kydex 'bridge' and washer to stretch the UKE across 1.5" o.c. holes without actually changing the size of the base so that users who prefer angled-carry don't have a big hump sticking out.

Since then I've had one customer request that the device mount to a sheath spaced 1" o.c., so I sent along the UKE 2.0 with a modified bridge to accommodate 1" or 1.5":

But the kydex sheaths I've seen on the Field Knives so far have looked like this (credit to whomever owns this pic, I just pulled it out of a google search):

HK measured the spacing as 2"x2" square, and I'm not sure that the eyelets are the right size hole for the standard screws/pillars, they look a bit narrow...

There are two obvious solutions to mounting a UKE to such a sheath in order to maximize customizability:

1) I could supply a customer with a 'bridge' for that 2" gap between eyelets, they could use the screws that came with their FK sheath to mount the bridge and thereby mount the UKE (or a Tek-lok for that matter)

2) Simpler than (1), users could drill/punch a hole in the kydex sheath or the included plate wherever needed to mount the accessory of their choice, be it a tek-lok or UKE or something different. :) As an example, I bought a much-less-sought-after TOPS BOB and modified it to accept the UKE by simply removing the attached clip and then drilling a single hole:

If anybody wants to send me their FK sheath to punch a hole in it or set up a bridge for mounting a UKE, just drop me a line via PM or e-mail (chiral.grolim (at) gmail (dot) com) and I'll get you squared away.

As for a home-brew rig without having something put in the mail - NetShocK, do you have any thick webbing or a spare leather belt? You can use something like this, folded over and cut to length, to form a belt-loop which you can then mount to the plate on your sheath by drilling a couple of holes and adding bolts/nuts or screws/pillars. And if you're looking for a dangler option using that tek-lok, you could just lace some cord through your tek-lok:

Good luck and let me know if I can be of service :)

The UKEs are great universal attachments, I've got several and am very pleased. Although chiral supplies the bridge for odd spacing, I would suggest that the cleanest option is to follow his #2 suggestion above--simply position the UKE as you will mount it to the sheath and drill one hole in the sheath to accommodate the spacing of the UKE. Many manufacturers use a 1/4" hole and 1/4" eyelet, so I generally drill a 1/4" hole to accomplish this. I have not pulled the belt attachment off of the field knife sheath to verify the eyelet size, if anyone has done that, please feel free to post it. I know the lower eyelets are quite obviously smaller than 1/4."

Also, disclaimer: If I start posting UKE pics, many times I modify them, i.e. shorten them, punch holes, do whatever to make them a more custom fit to my sheath. That is sometimes a pain for chiral, because folks don't realize I have modded them. Please refer to chiral's pictures to see the UKE as it is intended to ship to you

And also, please, don't hesitate to order a "virgin" UKE if you think it will work for you following a few modifications  The whole point is to make it as user-friendly as possible - drill'em, cut'em, bend'em, whatever you need to do to make it serve YOU :) The kit is a platform to help you achieve your preferred carry option.

Hey chiral, thanks for the quick follow-up. Your kit looks perfect, so I'm definitely going to order a couple once the Canada Post debacle is sorted out.

Well, a month later but here is an update:

These pics are from Hard Knocks. i sent him a little kydex bridge with hole-spacing for the FK sheath:

Hi Peter,

It looks like the UKE is going to match up good on the field knife with the added piece to bridge the gap. The one problem I found is that the high attachment binds some against the flare of the kydex for the handle. It's not horrible, but it does cant out the UKE a bit.

I think my preferred mount for this model would be with the UKE centered in the bridge. The dangler should still be plenty high, and of course you can shorten the dangler or go with the clip for a higher ride. Here's what I've got, let me know if you need more.

I'll add that with the UKE, you can use a Tek-lok (large or small), G-clip, Molle-lok, etc. and mount vertical, horizontal, angled, etc. Also, if you feel that it sticks out too far from the sheath, I have a fix for that!! The rubber washers included with the UKE act in part as spacers but mostly as traction for the angle-adjustment on the UKE. You can replace them with thinner rubber, for example I use belts from vacuum-cleaners when i want the UKE to sit closer to a sheath.

I'll knock a few out this week for mailing to folk, along with some of the vacuum-belt washer/spacers ;) I can mail that much in a stamped envelope. But if you note HK's preferred mounting, there is more/different attachment hardware in play - the screws/pillars joining everything are four (4) short ones, the size included with the belt-clip and the previous bridge. I'm not sure that the PO allows letters with those inside, plus they cost ~$1 per screw/pillar pair...

for those curious, my sig-line includes a sale thread on the UKE which costs $15 base +shipping. Adding the hardware will increase the price to $18 +shipping... i guess that's not so bad, considering that the sagewood dangler costs ~$30.

Edit to add one more pic:
