I haven't made one of these in awhile and thought I'd post. This Field Master design is a brute - sized for Elk/Moose/Bear 9 1/4" OAL, 4 1/2" BL, .200" Ricasso, hollow ground, stabilized Koa.
Hamons are tough on these big, hollow ground blades - if you grind the blade thin to save your hamon, the blade warps when you heat treat it. If you leave it too thick prior to heat treat, you grind away the ashi and the hamon creeps up towards the spine. Flat ground blades are more forgiving.
Be well,
TK
