Field Pup Sheath

So I've got my eye on the Field Pup. Everything about the blade itself I like, so that's not a problem. The sheath, however, from the only pic I've seen (which, bear in mind, was from eBay, so it might not be legitimate/current) seems to lack a retaining mechanism for the knife.

Now, I intend to put this knife on the belt of my lumbar pack for hiking (the bag also doubles as my BOB), and I do a lot of scrambling around on boulders and the like, which definitely could mean the knife falling out of the sheath if there's no retainer.

Thus, two questions:

First, is there in fact a retaining mechanism on the sheath, or is the sheath tight enough to retain the Pup without one?

Second, does anyone have any pics of the Field Pup and sheath together that they could post? I'd like to be able to get a better idea of what I'd be purchasing.

Thanks!

(and yes, I know I could get a custom sheath made, which is what I'll probably end up doing, but hey, humor me. :) )

BuckyKatt, I did a little search to find a decent pic. and found the following, http://store.yahoo.com/sawyerscutlery/fp3.html , I don't know if the sheath has a kydex retainer inside. I would guess that the knife would stay put just fine, but if it were mine, I would probable add a retainer strap which would be very simple to do. I looked at many pics and none shows a retainer strap. I am sure SOG would not design this sheath like this if it would not hold the knife secure under normal conditions.
However, the use that you describe could mean the knife could be upside down sometimes and maybe even shaken around in this position. I have not seen the sheath so I can not say if I think it would hold the knife secure in these conditions. Any one who works with leather could put a nice retainer on this sheath for a few bucks I am sure. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, Robbie. I think I'm going to go ahead and get the knife, then decide what I'll do about the sheath.... Either add a retainer to the factory sheath (thanks for the suggestion) or get a custom Kydex rig. In any event, it's the *knife* I'm after, so... Right. :)

Hi Guys, unless SOG changed the sheath for the Field Pup in the last year, it does not have a retaining strap. It does come with a Hybrid Kydex/Leather Pouch sheath that doesn't need a strap. The knife and sheath in the link that Robbie posted looks identical to the Field Pup I used to have.

Earlier this year before I sold my Field Pup to another forum member, I made a couple Sandwich sheaths with retaining straps for the Field pup that went with the knife. If you are interested in something, let me know.

The Field Pup is a really nice knife. I really liked mine and wish I still had one. It's a perfect size for a camp knife and holds a good edge. Handle is also very comfortable. :) Please keep us up todate on it's use and sheathing. :)

FYI:

The Field pup knife at SOG's website lists for $54.95 and at AGRussell it lists
for $39.95, I noticed the Field Knife at SOG's website is now made of CPMS-30V steel
and is called the BGH93 and sells for $129.95 and at AGRussell the Field knife is
made of BG42 steel and is called the X-42 Field knife and sells for $89.95, that is quite
a price difference, I am thinking about getting a Field knife but I wonder what are
the pros and cons of the two steels?

Ok, so I recieved my Field Pup... and the sheath is just fine.

There isn't a retaining strap per se, but the fit is tight enough to hold it securely enough for my needs. I held the whole assembly upside down and shook it as hard as I could... with the third shake, it barely wiggled. ;)

The knife itself is wonderful. I think I'm blessed with extremely medium hands... Every knife I purchase that has an anatomically contoured handle fits perfectly, including this one. The Kraton is nice; certainly better than that on my SRK: it's less gummy-feeling.

Thank you, SOG. I had my doubts, but you proved to me once again that you make a rock-solid line of products.

BuckyKatt, Great ! I would say they made that one special for you  , glad you like the sheath. If it loosens in the future for any reason, you could always put a snap on it. Those knives sure are comfy to hold, I don't own one but have held them before.
