Field Reports?

With the exception of Gravertom and a few others, I've seen very few field reports lately even though the UBBB's have been fast and furious. Are people just shy about posting their thoughts and observations on new khuks? Are the khukuris not getting used? What's the deal?

The Village model sirupatis that Yangdu put up a few weeks ago got the better of me. I ordered two.

The unfinished wood handles had a lot of potential, two different colors of wood.
I didn't feel the need to scrub them down with soap or anything, didn't have the rouge on them. I have just used steel wool to smooth them off a bit. Have applied 4 coats of boiled linseed oil, turp and truoil on them so far. The wood is really being highlighted and beautiful.
I've always been a sucker for the two tone wood on some of the handles.

but than again, grey streaks in horn are good. Whorls? in the grain are good, deep oak color is good. Did I say I like the grains in the wood? Easier to maintain in this NM dry climate, also.

Now about the cutting ability and blades of the sirupati. well ya'll know about that. LOL :eek:
 
The last one I got is sitting in the Home Depot bucket. There's not a lot of stress on the tang in this position, so I don't think it'll snap.

I've been lazy. :(

I got the tourist model, but haven't yet had the courage to hit anything with it...

The AK Bowie I snagged is going to be a mustard/mayonaise/ketchup and vinegar wash, followed by bluing. Whatcha think?
 
I just got a 12" villager AK but I haven't gotten a chance to take it out and play with it yet.

I dunno, Bruise, since I used all my mustard on my khukuri blades, I've been using bluing solution on my sandwiches, and the taste isn't half bad. My liver hurts quite a bit though, and I can't stand up very quickly or I pass out, but other than that...

Nasty-- take a look at the patina pics in this thread. I think it was done with FeCl and vinegar with some selective polishing, but now I can't remember for sure, and John was never too specific on the process anyway.

It almost looks like a lemon job gone over with a loose bob dremel in a kind of hopscotch pattern...???
 
I don't think lemon juice/citrus would get that dark. I think you're right on the dremel though, or maybe some sort of acid resistant material like wax was selectively placed on the blade before the etching.

Doubt you will see one Dan...*those* really are too pretty to rough up.

Here's my "field report" on my BDC:

Got it in the usual triangular box, admired it, cleaned it, waxed the sheath, admired it some more, sharpened it, admired the way it took an edge, sliced some paper and stuff (didn't want to mess it up because it was soooo purdy), admired the way it looked slipping though increasing numbers of sheets of paper, cleaned it again, resheathed it, admired the fit of the sheath, packed it carefully for my trip to Oklahoma, hurried to unpack it in the garage at the airport to make sure it hadn't been scuffed or damaged or anything (gasp) worse, admired it in the car on the drive to the hotel. Got there, admired it for a few days after visiting a friend, went back to the friends house and let an ole ndn talk me out of it. :-(

FWIW, that ole ndn trader made me one heck of a deal to get it away from me. I *will* be ordering another...

And it's still sitting right beside my chair aka, sleeping perch. And there it will set until I get tired of picking it up and looking at it which I doubt will be anytime near soon.:p :rolleyes: ;) :D
I do have to say that Nasty did one helluva job of sharpening it.:D

Great review, Hollowdweller. Your pictures are always so green. It it that way all year or does it dry off in the summer?
