Looking for a field sharpener for my Mini Commander. What do you guys suggest.

BTW, I generally use a Spyderco Sharpmaker or a DMT stone at home....

Take a look at the GATCO TRI-SHEPS Sharpener, it might be just what your looking for.

It comes in two different versions... diamond or ceramic, extremely compact ( 4.5" length ) and the two different radius sizes should let you sharpen the recurve on the Mini Commander with no problem.

I use the ceramic Gatco Tristeps on my mini Comm. Works great and doesn't cost much. But several and stash in packs and such.

To me a field sharpner could be a flat stone, square of sandpaper, or even what works in the field for emergency sharpening.

How is a flat stone going to sharpen a Commander ?

Try an Ultra Tek from Kershaw. Or the Emerson site sells the same one, without the name.

This is what I was going to suggest. Emerson sells two sizes. The smaller one should work pretty well in the field and be easy to carry. OTOH, if you want something more versatile, you might try to find one of the disco'd Spyderco Duckfoot sharpeners. They should also handle a recurve blade very nicely and they'll be familiar to use for anyone that uses a SM.

Before all these hi tech gadgets were born people sharpning knives with stones or even a flat rock like I learned to do to in the Boy Scouts around 1956.

He asked about sharpening a recurve. While it can be done on a flat stone, its prolly not the best suggestion for someone who had to ask.

wet or dry sandpaper wrapped around a dowel works good for my Emersons with recurves and is easy to pack. I keep a dollar sized piece of 1500 wet or dry in my wallet :D

Although it is a little big for the pocket (though not impossible), the Spyderco Golden Stone is all you'll need. The way it is designed, you can stand it vertically and it give you about a 20 degree angle--by tilting the stone, you get both sides. It's hard to explain without you seeing it--it is a great sharpener and I use it to touch up all my recurves... and everything else. You will not be sorry--it keeps my Ubr Commander wickedly sharp.

I use an EZLap M or some wet/dry sandpaper wrapped around the edge of my lighter (backup fire starter). I often carry an Emerson Commander/Super Commander while hiking and these work great.
