The ERU is not cheap or plastic, but its the best field sharpener out there. It offers a wide range of sharpening angles to compliment any knife.

I hadn't seen this before, thats a lovely device! Is it designed to be a full on sharpener or more of a hone?

Fred's ERU system iis the best field sharpening system I have ever used. I just completed testing two off them for a few weeks. I successfully did both sharpening and honing with the ERU. It depends on the amount of pressure you use on the draw.

The size, adjustablilty & ease off use make this unit my recommendation for a field sharpening & honing system.
Just bring a black maker for any unfamiliar knives you want to sharpen, it will speed up time finding the correct angle.

Thanks for the information, think I might have to add one of these to my to buy list! I love elegant solutions to problems like this.

Are those cutters metal like carbide or something? I heard you should never use metal cutting sharpeners.

Always be willing to try new things. Its the foundation of invention; improving on a concept. Knives started out as pieces of flint chipped to make them sharp. Somehow humans progressed to what we call a knife today.
With an ERU there is no need to learn how to hold an angle; the adjustable "V" can be set to any angle you want. No guess work, you can always produce the same cutting edge.

I didn't know advertising was allowed outside of the buy/sell/trade section....

If this is advertising then every mention of and every picture of any sharpening devise is advertising which it is not. When you quote prices or discus sales, that would be considered advertising.
Since we are a two man operation and not a multinational company with zillions of dollars of backing we don't have the luxury of ten thousand dollar add campaigns. It can also be interpreted as self promotion, when I put on give aways on this and many other on line forums. I've given away thousands of dollars of Bubble Jigs and billets of damascus on this forum alone over the last 5 years. Its good business seance, you surly agree. I would like to think its also, part of what I do as a member of this community. In line with this I also share my 16 years of knife making and shop experience; its part of what I do to contribute to this fine community. I will be doing the same with the ERU latter this year with a giveaway and possibly even a knife to sharpen. :)

I see this forum along with all the other forums on line as avenues to share information, techniques, along with testing and feedback of knives, machines, tools and all the rest.
The OP of this thread asked about field sharpeners; do you believe the post for Sharpmaker is advertising or is it just sharing information about a product offered on line? Thats what my post is; I am sharing another on line product; I just happen to make this one.

If you are interested in availability and pricing contact me personally and we can discuss this.

Regards, Fred

With a more abrasion resistant blade the need for field sharpening is greatly reduced - often eliminated. My first choice is carrying a second knife. Or even a third.

If you are skilled with a stone, just consider carrying a small stone, typically a 1k stone. For some knives the ERU is certainly a reasonable field sharpener from what I've heard of it.

Exactly. You just happen to make it. You personally benefit from saying that it's the "best" field sharpener on the market.

That's why it counts as advertising.

I may be sticking my nose where it doesn't belong here but just I rarely (read NEVER) go to the B/S/T section, so I would never hear of the ERU or many other items of interest, so personally I SUPPORT people, including vendors, who after all are the experts regarding their own products to share their KNOWLEDGE with the rest of us AND get feedback from their customers. The fine line between someone else other than the vendor posting information about a product and the vendor not posting or even being allowed to respond to INCORRECT information about a product is VERY unfair to a vendor. Of course the flip side of this is that others may also post THEIR opinions about a vendor's product and that opinion EVEN IF THE VENDOR DISAGREES STRONGLY with that opinion is also more than fair game. Both need to be allowed and RESPECTED. The reader is free to decide what he wishes to believe and form his OWN opinion. I am not stating forum policy, but my personal opinion here. Sales, discount coupons and posts that are devoid of information content are another matter and this I don't feel benefits the forum OR the person or company advertising their product. IMHO.

Thanks for your post Ken.

The rules as I understand them relative to a dealer's membership is they are allowed to post in all discussion forums and be involved in discourse that mention a product they flip or produce. What is not allowed is talking price, linking to sites like E-bay or taking orders in these forums.

*The only members who may promote or display their personally built knives, their products, or services in the discussion threads, signature, home page listing or their user profile are "Manufacturers", "Dealers", and "Knifemaker/Craftsman/Service Provider".*

I've been on this website for a lot of years and I've tried as best as I can to follow and support the site in every manner. Some times I fall short but it is never for lack of effort.

Bison has been here for less than a month and has yet to garner any street cred at least by most standards. He is welcome to participate in the discussions as all the rest of us are; but I find it a bit much to see someone with so little investment, police others who have a long history of participation and contribution.
