Field sharpening a HH

Here's a question for all of you HOGs who use their SH/HH/FSH in the field/in the woods to blaze trails, chop down trees, dig holes, take care of miscellaneous camp chores, etc., etc. As the owner of a recently-acquired HH and avid leathercrafter, I want to make up one of those sheaths that carry a field sharpener along with the knife. Question is: Which field sharpener?? Must be able to iron out chips/dings, as well as put a on decent edge. Come on, guys, please let me have it!!! Any comments are appreciated!!!

i think a white ceramic stone or rod would be best. cliff stamp might drop in and let you know what he uses.

For the guy that just got dropped off by a bush pilot onto a lake-shore 300 miles from the nearest telephone in Alaska, I'd recommend the "EZ Lap M". It's a 4" aluminum rod encrusted with diamonds, stored in a brass tube that becomes the handle. It's overkill for just about anything except extreme duty.

For normal duty use, or plans on being home in the next few days, I'll second what Skunk said. Does HandAmerican.com still supply that kind of stuff??

handamerican.com is the way to go. Got a black arkansas rod from them and a smooth steel rod. They work wonders for putting a nice quick edge on anything, even a knife with a convex edge.

I am a big fan of the EZlap dimond hones. I have the fine and the medium. They are a thin plastic handle with a dimond hone surface and fit easily on the back or front of a sheath. I have abit of 50mm webbing sewen onto the back of my camp tramp sheath and it is not noticeable, but always there when needed. It works fine on my tramp and I recon would do the same job on a busse.

Given how easy INFI is to sharpen, Arkansas stones are probably as much as necessary.
Does anyone have a lot of experience field sharpening infi with a few different stones or sharpeners? Or does anybody know how fast an EZlap fine hone cuts?

editing to add: the system I used overseas was the E-Z lap M rod to quickly put on a sharp, course edge, then either my Fallkniven DC3 or DC4 diamond side to get it a bit less rough, then finally the ceramic side to polish it a bit. This was done on 3v, s30v, and 154cm, but I never got my bigger blades dull enough for anything more than a steel.

I use the the air bleeder strop for touch up. I follow up with a smooth steel rod from handamerican.com when needed. For full on sharpening, I use a Norton diamond steel (similar to EZ Lap) and Norton water stones followed up with flat leather strips and compound from handamerican.com.
I sharpen knives, plane blades and wood chisels with the Nortons, and I wouldn't trade them for anything I've run across yet. The smooth steel rod has given me a whole new ease to keeping my edges functional and I hope to find a smaller one for in the field.

I had to bring this up to the top again, mainly, because I've run across better ways since my last post here. Don't get me wrong, the Air Bleeder has been good in it's applications. But, the original question was about field sharpening, and this question seems to keep coming up.
I beat the bejesus out of my HH alot. I use it for many duties while working on my property, and as a result, the HH gets dinged ALOT. While outside I use the EZE Lap M rod mentioned earlier. I now keep one in all my BOBs and gear. It works great and is very inexpensive. I am trying to come up with a small version of the sandpaper/mousepad sharpening setup for while I'm camping. This setup has been the best for keeping the edge real nice an crisp and I use a steel and ceramic rods from Handamerican.com for the real difficult spots. I have had some real issues with keeping my ST Ripper hair popping sharp though. In house or field, I can get it sharp enough to skin and gut, clean fish and cut my food up while camp/cooking, but it's just not getting as sharp as it did when I first received it or right after I stripped it. Maybe I'll get some good feedback @ Blade West this weekend. I'll share if so.

I use an EZE Lap M. Makes fast work of field sharpening.

Mt. Mike makes sheaths with EZE Lap holders to give you some ideas....

Oops, should have read through the full thread before posting :o The EZE Lap makes for a quick edge, but for a razor edge, I have a combination whetstone with 1500 grit on one side, 6000 grit on the other. You will have no problems shaving after using one of these.
