Field Sharpening a Khurkri

I've never tried one but I might just get one myself, looks viable to me. I kind of suck at sharpening. I used to be able to do a good edge but anymore I struggle.

I stick with the fine sand paper and mouse pad routine but I struggle with that too.

Think I might be loosing my edge?

Ben, the owner of baryonyx, is a great guy. You need to see his video of him mowing grass with a scythe. It's magical.

I thought the exact same thing and ordered that stone with his rounded corners treatment and eagerly await its arrival:)

He sells a "JewelStik" which says is just for scythes, sickles, khukuri etc. Fun website. I'm reading about raising some meat rabbits!

... so far though no one has sharpened their Khurks using a scythe stone
I agree - great web site and worth our patronage - so are we all buying new stones from him? :D

LOL, Always peened my scythes for primary sharpening, then a stone just like the ones he calls "Milano" stones to keep it sharp in between peenings. But that was decades ago and my skill got so bad I had to buy a jig for peening to get the proper angle to get the blade sharp. Yep, it is a VERY efficient shape stone for the task.

I doubt you would ever need something as aggressive as a scythe stone to bring the edge back up on an HI khuk. I don't know if your familiar with scythe blades but they are very thin. Machete like. Well at least the ones of many moons ago. I used to talk with the guys in the sub-forum over in the axe forum about my old scythe and stuff. You could sure use the stone though, it would be just like any other stone except it would fit the contour of the blade. The stone would work fine, it would just put a rough edge on the blade first then take quite a bit of honing to get it back to fine again.
I normally use round ceramic rods or sand paper when I know I'll need to touch up out and about.

An 800 grit ceramic or finer then? I like the rod idea but for field work they are fragile so why I was looking into the more substantial scythe stone. I'll look for a compromise size in a medium to high grit ceramic. Thanks.

I've used the BYX Co. scythe stone on everything from pocket knives, to khukuris and axes and love the result. Usually all my khukuri needs is some love on a 1000 grit ceramic and it's good to go though.

I'm told that "the largest diameter ceramic rod you can find" is the ticket for sharpening the recurved part of the khukuri...

And to think I was holding out for an empty paper towel roll!
I'm excited about my dowel sharpening attempt: coming soon.

Convex edges are worth it, love my HI.

It's Saturday...do you know where your dowels are? Off to the hardware store!
I finally got a great edge on the belly of my YCS (Karda), time to do the recurve!

1" dowel and some 220/400/600 is the game plan!
Thanks for the idea.

Are you going blade first or spine first? Sharpening on a stone or stropping backwards?

No old broom sticks lying around? You can have different grits all lined up the length of the stick.

That's exactly what I use. Not tall folks in this house so 5 or 6 inches of handle gone will go unnoticed.

Now days the hard part is have brooms etc with wood handles.

I do have smaller dowels that I use for gun and handle projects, down to 1/8", 1/4 and 1/2 etc.

Closet rods too. Though wife wonders why all clothes on floor. Priorities!!

Funny! I did that once too. Made me buy a new closet rod but at least I have a life time supply for other needs or shorter closets I guess.
