Field sharpening hard steels

If anyone has experience sharpening super steels vs. tool steels in the field I have a question.

Is it reasonable to sharpen steels like CPM 3V, S30V, or S35V in the field using small, hiking size equipment? I'm debating an investment in a utility/bushcraft knife in one if these steels vs. construction in O1, A2, or D2.

I'm already aware of 1095s use for easier edge maintenance.

Thanks.

Just bring a coarse/fine combo DMT Diafold with you and you should be fine. :)

That's what I would do as well. D2 and A2 are pretty hard steels also if properly heat treated.

I don't know about S35 or 3V but, it is possible to get M4 and S30V back to arm shaving sharpness with a spyderco double stuff fairly quickly. The key is to not let the edge get too dull. Personally I will touch up an edge as soon as possible if it no longer shaves hair.

+1 for anything diamond on these steels. My first choice would be a DMT 'credit card' hone (about as portable as a true 'pocket hone' can be). Probably a Fine (600 mesh/25 micron) and/or a Coarse (325 mesh/45 micron) for more extensive damage repairs.

+1 on the DMT suggestions. Add to that --> a small, pocket-size strop loaded with black or green compound. DLT Trading has a great, ultralight 4" strop they call the "Field Hone" that is great. Bark River makes good, aggressive compounds in black and green.
