started to ask this on the sharpening thread already going but didnt wanna hi-jack. it's a great thread with good advice. so my ? is about what you folks carry for field sharpening? when ya dont have the leisure of sitting down with yr home sharpeners?

I just carry a small Spyderco pocket ceramic stone. It works very well to touch up a blade while out and about. It came with a leather pouch that makes a decent impromptu strop, too.

I keep one of those folding DMT diamond sharpeners in my pack, I find it to work pretty well for touchups out in the field.

I have a small med stone I picked up at a flee market for 1$; It works amazingly.
I have a small ceramic rod which came in my SAK PSK that Mr Coffee sent me; Thank you again .
I have used a flat stone from the bottom of a creek to sharpen my RC-3 once as well.

yeah ive heard folks talking using a found stone in the field, havent tried that myself as i do carry a little pocket sharpener. might hafta give it a try sometime with a knife im not in love with. just so ill know what to expect if it became necessary. depending on where you are the types of stone available will change of course. have traveled to places it might very well be difficult to find a stone at all....

I have a DMT double sided sharpener, med/fine. I also have a roll up field strop from JRE industrys loaded with black compound.

I have a Fallkniven DC3 diamond/ ceramic stone that does most my bush sharpening I also got a small ceramic rod from VICTORINOX for smaller kits and a Smiths postage stamp sized diamond plate in my DR PSK.
But DC3 is best.

I use DC4 sharpening stone (Diamond/Ceramic) i found it to be the best size to fit my pockets and it works great, DMTs are also very good but I tend to break the hinges (don't ask me how), at least I can't break the Stone, plus the sheath that comes with it is great and I use to strop he blade at the end.

At home the setup is different, 2 DMT stones, medium and fine and Japanese water stones 4000 and 8000, plus a leather strop.

On the move I just have a leather strop and a DC4 stone.

I got one of those - not really lightweight,
this is much more portable, and you can sharpen wider serrations with it. Those are really fine grit though, so I think of complementing it with a diamond sharpener of some sort.

At home I have several bench stones and something similar to the sharpmaker.

I carry the Fallkniven DC4 dual grit sharpener and a ceramic rod, and sometimes a lansky puck if I have an axe with me.

I use this. Smith's Combo DCS4 sharpener. It works absolutely perfectly for putting a good edge on the knife in the field. It fits perfectly in the pouch on my RTAKII sheath.

At home I use my Spyderco for sharpening which seems to work quite well on serrations. In the field with just a stone how would one do the serrations?? Just use the edge of the stone??

actually, I use the same double grit folding diamond stone for both.
