Field Sharpening

Hey Guys,

Well, I've become fairly proficient at putting an edge on my XM using the Wicked Edge. I returned the Field and Sport because of some design drawbacks on small knives, probably would be fine for the XM for a portable. But short of spending another $300+ on a portable WE and lugging around a bunch of stones, what do some of you have in case you need to sharpen in the field - like on a hunting trip or camping/hiking? I don't go on extended hiking/camping trips, maybe a week tops. Should I get a Sharpmaker as a portable quicky "just in case I MUST sharpen" tool? Or maybe just a stone that I could use since I have the basic concept down of angle and getting a burr, etc. If I did get a stone any recommendations?

I know I should probably have posted this in the maintenance forum but this forum is my "home" and I know and trust many of you so I'm putting it here. Plus, it's about keeping my XM sharp!

Thanks All!

Bought this at my local knife shop for $7. Same concept as a sharpmaker, but much smaller (and cheaper). I was able to revive a completely dulled out edge on my friend's knife in a matter of mins. Heck, I even sharpened my Esee Junglas with this thing!

Depends on many factors. The SM could be carried if weight and bulk is of little concern.

A small quality stone and a little user attention can remove slight edge rolls, etc.

Just prepare all your gear before you depart, know its 100% before you leave, then touch it up often while out. This maintenance should go a long way to avoiding an edge issue that could be cumbersome in the field without proper tools.
