I am very interested in learning how to sharpen free hand and field sharpening, any suggestions other than cheap knives and lots of practice?

Some good field sharpening products, do I use diamond sticks or stones, what? I know to stay away from the gimicky stuff that you just drag the blade through, so what do I use for these applications?

Thanks

If you have a big car, take a large bucket of water and a set of sharpening stones.

DMT dia-folds, the C/F and EF/EEF would cover almost all sharpening needs.

The trick, of course, is not to let your knife get too dull, in the first place.

If all your knife needs is a "touch up" then I recommend Ragnar's (www.ragweedforge.com) "Viking Whetstones". These stones do a very nice job, yielding edges that are just a touch more aggessive than white ceramic sticks usually do. These stones are designed to wear around the neck, so they are always with you. Viking Whetstones can be very attractive, too. Mine is about the only "jewelry" I wear, anymore.

i second the dmt diafolds..these are what i use in the field. i also just use the coarse/fine and the xfine/xxfine and they cover any touchups just fine. lately ive been carrying a dmt credit card sized diamond stone in fine and then on the back side of it i glued a piece of leather rubbed down with chromium oxide polish and i made a thin sheath for it and carry it in my pocket all the time and use it for daily touchups as needed and love it.
