Field & Stream: A Entertaining Article on Sharpening Knives

Overdramatized, they make it seem like there is something supernatural about blade sharpening, something that the average person cannot hope to manage.

I remember reading a book a few years ago about pilots before WWI- one of the pilots walked outside, looked up and said "air's no good for flying today", so they didn't try to fly that day.

Did we read the same article? Nickens talks about a pro knifemaker showing him how to get his favorite knife good and sharp in fairly simple terms. It's an editorial, a fluff piece... and yet it contains no glaring errors. Which is frankly pretty unusual for the average hunting/fishing magazine, especially when it comes to knives. Most knife "articles" are either lifted straight from the ad copy on the very next page and/or so full of baloney they do more harm than good.

I've noticed a few national magazine editors giving handmade and high-end knives some love the past couple years, and I'm all for it. Good to see Mr. Donovan getting some well-deserved attention. F&S reaches a heckuva lotta people, most of whom spend an average of about $40 on their knives (judging by their advertisers and the knives they usually "review" ).

I agree, regarding the pleasure of seeing a knife article such as this in such a main stream publication. A non knife guy sent it to me and it's awesome that something that is this factual and captures so much soul about owning and maintaining knives was seen by him.
