Hi Everybody,
Here is a little story almost 11 years in the making.
It was my very first Blade show, I had been making sheaths for people for their Busse knives for about 4 years at that time.
I had been to Blade West when it was in Ontario California (man that was a fun time, truck races and all)
Did the scavenger Hunt in Vegas during SHOT show (another really fun time)
But I looked forward to Blade in ATL for quite some time.
I was sharing a Booth with my great friend Justin Gingrich (Ranger Knives) and the one Busse booth was on the other side of the show.
Now this was long before the "tossing of tags" and all that fun time.
This was even before Fudruckers and Jocks and Jill's. Just a different time.
What Jerry did at that time was he would have samples of this Swamp Rat ??? Line that was coming up and then he would lay out the pile of custom shop stuff. And if you could afford it you would pick it up and pay for it.
At the time I was still a part time sheath/holster maker and still worked 50 hrs a week being a linen delivery guy, so most if not all my money went to kids, house and ex-wife (she was my wife at the time) .
so I barely afforded the plan ticket, traded for the hotel room with a customer that worked for a hotel chain, and bummed rides here and there.
The money I had to spend on knives would have to be earned at the show, and I was waiting on a check from a big customer for 800.00 but had not gotten it before I left.
So Friday comes and the Piano keys come out, I had to pass because I did not have the dough, even though that was one I really wanted, (still want one should anyone ever want to let one go
)
Called the ex-wife and still no check so bummed.
Then Saturday comes and Jerry after presenting the Chuckette to 1whobuys (another story, but it is Chucks to tell) puts out these fighters

Man I am in love with this thing but again could not afford it.
most might be saying 'did you not have credit cards ?" at the time I did but they were for "emergencies"
So I talk to Jerry and say to myself if it is still there Sunday Morning I am going to have a credit card "Emergency" and buy it.
Saturday night after a long night at "The Fountain" (more stories) I called the ex-wife and asked if the check got there and sure enough it did, so I had the money
Sunday Morning after checking the booth and making sure everything was good to go I marched over to the Busse booth to buy my "Grail" I never knew existed.
I got to the table and looked around, This was a time when the fans would run out of money before Busse ran out of knives so there were still a few there. Kept looking and no fighter ????
I asked if maybe they put it back behind the table for me or something even though I never asked them to hold it. Nope not here ? Then they said that it sold.
I saw a great friend of mine was smiling from ear to ear
The INFI Hog cry of "No Regrets" could be heard being muttered through out the trough.
I snoozed and lost my fight went into an INFI black hole.
I asked if he ever got rid of it please at least let me have a shot at it, he smiled, I knew then he had no plans of ever letting it go anytime soon.
He never sells anything. :grumpy:
Over the years my friend would post pics of parts of his collection and now and then my "Grail" would be there.
I would e-mail or call him and remind him to again please let me know if or when he ever got rid of it to please let me know.
Just a little over 10 years later 2015 I get a e-mail and looks as though my fighter is coming home.
soon there after I got her in the mail.
I think I heard angels
1 tiny problem, at the time Busse was using a (in my opinion) coating I did not like a kind of bumpy tan stuff that if you looked at it sideways would get smoothed out and look super light tan.
Almost all of the original Ruck Kensei's had it. So I contacted Garth and sent it in to have a satin finish put on it. (that was Julyish) Not knowing how backlogged they were
well last week she came home and this knife is fast comfy and everything you could want in a fighter.
It is also one of the very very few Busse's I have ever seen with a distilled taper all the way from the front of the scales to the tip.
It is not for Chopping (even though I am sure it would do fine).
My best guess is it started as a BM-E ZT and had Jerry's magic worked on it.
This was also the time when Jerry I believe did all the variants.
Well that is the story Everybody, hope you enjoyed it.
Thank you
David
