I'm still busting my fingers to the bone working on Blade bowies. My hands are aching and need a rest so I decided to take a pic of the piece I am currently working on.

Fighting bowie, 9.5" W2, hamon, will get a 416 fighter guard, and stabilized spalted box elder handle.

The knife looks pretty rough now, but it will clean up nicely :). The hamon turned out well; the utsuri is very bold.

This is the fifth of five bowies that will be on the table at the show. With a small miracle I might be able to get a sixth done ;)

Looks like it is coming along great Matt.I'll be looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

As is the case with all of the knives you've posted pics of; Danbo like and Danbo need! :)

Dan, you'll have time to handle a few in person, just make sure you find me Thursday :). I'll be a little arrogant, this piece is ten times better in person ;)...I've got to build a light box.

Update...

Changed the handle, California buckeye burl, it looks like Stary Night in person. The guard is only pressed on, no JB Weld yet. No etch either...

Looking pretty sweet, Matt. That W-2 bowie and my 1065 one should meet for a friendly cutting competition at some point. ;)

Burch, when are you getting in to Blade? Give me a call today when you get some time.

Matt,
As usual.Your KILLER Bowies!
I greatly admire your work and hope to acquire a Bowie by you.
The hamon on this one is
That burl looks gorgeous.
You got to build a lightbox! :D

Doug:)

You're right, I do need to build a light box. My photos make my knives look like poo ;). That's good in a way, people are usually very surprised when they see my work in person ;) :) :D .

Matt -- just gave you a call, but didn't even get an answering machine (I probably dialed the wrong number though. :D) Shoot my your number again when you get a chance.

I'll be coming to blade on Friday -

Your hardening lines ( Hamon ) are great with some of that smoke look.
What is the attachment process for the handle ?

Be well
Floyd

FWO, the handle has not been attached in the pic, it was just a dry fit...finished piece tomorrow.

Let me qualify, what will be the attachment process for the handle. I was aware it was a trial run. Will this be a blind tang, with a pin and epoxy, a through tang , or ? I think that might clear up my poor english.

Be well
Floyd

FWO, sorry I didn't understand your question. First step is slightly hollow grinding the tang at 36 grit, the tang is drilled for a hidden pin and a hidden rivet, the handle is press fit onto the tang, the tang is cleaned with detergent and acetone, slow cure epoxy, sometimes a small domed pin for decoration (modern epoxies, rivets, hidden pins, and a course tang make the pin overkill- the handle will never move...I've tried ;)).

The handle has been finished ground, drilled for a small pin, and epoxied. Next step is contouring the handle.

Finally built a light box :).

Here are some light box shots. I'm still playing with lighting, I imagine it will be a while before my photos are decent...they're better at least :).

Next step is contouring the handle then final polish and etch...
