Bill,

I understand that your Sirupati are considered excellant fighting khukuri.

Am I correct that the 20" has a blade of approximately 15" and that the 15" has a 10" blade? Are the Sirupati your only "fighting khukuri", or just your best ones? The "utility" side seems pretty clear cut (pardon the pun) for me btw. A 15", or may be an 18" AK.

My last question. What's the going price for a 15-18" AK and a 20" Sirupati? I'd like to know how many pennies I need to save, but didn't see any prices on your web site.

TIA.

Dave.

Rusty has commented on an even lighter, thinner khukuri than the regular Sirupati, a Sirupati styled Chainpuri :

You might want to consider the 18" Century as well as it is very light like the Sirupati but much wider. The weight is kept down becuase it has a deep hollow grind at the top and a thinner cutting bevel. I would strongly bet that its penetration (tip and main blade) and slicing ability would be greater than a similar sized Sirupati. Its only disadvantage would be that is is weaker in regards to lateral forces, so its utility aspect is much lower.

If you want to get comments from actual khukuri stylists get Bill to give you the email address of some Bando guys like Jim Bleckel.

Lastly, note that if you are into fighting khukuris Bill has in the past looked for lighter, slimmer versions of the stock models for those so inclined. So if you really like a blade design I would assume that he could keep an eye out for a lightweight version of such.

Hi Dave:

Cliff took care of everything except price. 20 inch Sirupati and 15 inch AK are $175. 18 inch AK is $195.

Don't rule out the BAS, it's definitelly in the fighting category. sort of like a lighter WWII or A.K.

I would love to see pictures of the various khukuris that you all are talking about that are not on Bill's site, e.g. WWII, BAS, Chainpuri, and whatever else is out there.

Dave, the pennies are well saved and spent on one of these. I got my first HI AK several weeks ago. It's a beaut!

Ok, more choices is good.

I'm with Sing, can anyone provide full length pics of a Chainpuri or an 18th Century?

Bill, what would a 20" Chainpuri go for price wise? Also, I'd love to speak to any Bando stylists you could give me e-mails for. I'd like to hear from people who actually train to fight with these knives.

By the way, what if I've never handled a khukuri (I'm not counting the CS Ghuka I handled at Ches. K.T.)? How do I know I'm picking the right one for me (wrt weight, length, balance, etc.)?

TIA.

Dave.

Hi Dave:

If it's any help the 20 inch Sirupati is the most popular among martial artists.

We offer an exchange policy with every khukuri we send. Try it and if you think you'd like something better return the knife for a trade. But, my guess is once you get the 20 inch Sirupati you will never send it back.

I'll email you a Bando contact.

Dave, remember that I'm 5'4", 48 and fat. My main exercise is jumping to conclusions. So I like the light, fast ones, and go for 18" and up to make up some of the difference in power lost by going to a lighter weight thru increased velocity.

Rusty,

Well, I'm slighty bigger than you @ 5'9", but as far as the upper body goes, I'm built like Tweety Bird.

The body mechanics of the Filipino style that I'm training in, help make up for the lack of upper body strength. However, my concern is how the geometry of a khukuri will fit into the frame work of my style. I'm thinking that the lighter blade might be a better fit, but I wanted a longer blade too, which is why I originally asked about the 20" Sirupati. Just checking into all the options though.

Thanks.

Dave.

Dave, I think you will be able to handle the 20 inch Sirupati okay but I'm sold out right now and there's a wait list.
