I want to thank everyone for welcoming me to BladeForums. Your comments and suggestions make me realize how little I know about the knife world. But, I am a fast study and look forward to assimilating as much information as possible. Getting more specific about my knife applications and requirements: general camp use, backpacking, scuba diving, cutting, light chopping, prying and wilderness survival. The only fighting I anticipate is with mosquitos, snakes, underwater wreckage and the occassional bear. Price range about $100+/-, 5-7" production fixed blade, rubber/composite handle, kydex sheath.
I look forward to your suggestions and advice.

Sounds like a SOG SEAL knife might be in order...

And tomorrow when you wake up it will be worse.

Falkniven or Busse Basic in that price range. The Falkniven will be a little under, the Busse Basics a little over.

Welcome to the forums. Good luck and have fun trying to find that "perfect" knife to fit your needs. You're certain to get LOTS of good suggestions. Here's mine:

Customize Your Own "Tactical" Knife

The term "tacticle" is pretty vague and misleading, but I think you'll find that any of the configurations of the knives in the link will suit your needs very well. Great craftsmanship, durabliity and value from Ted Frizzell.

Have fun and play nice!

You may want to take a look at the Camillus Becker line. You can find them under 1SKS (hit the store buttom on the top bar), or search the Camillus forum under Maker's and Manufacturers.

Have fun.

I would highly rek'mnd checking out two places:

1. Newt Livesay...bunch of good knives!!!

2. Cold Steel Factory Seconds!!!

Although I love Newt's stuff, many people prefer a more refined production piece. I have had a bunch of CS knives, and they rock for the money if they are seconds!!!

I love my LIVESAY knives, give them a try.

One problem you have is that you want a knife good for camping/hiking, which is also good for scuba diving. That presents a problem. A SOG SEAL 2000 probably is the best knife to cover all of what youw ant to do, but it is probably too much of a compromise. If you really can only get away with one knife, I'd recommend the SOG knife too. Otherwise, look for a diving knife and a knife for your pursuits on land. For those, I'd suggest Cold Steel too. I jsut got a Bush Ranger, and I think this is an awesome outdoors blade. It doesn't have a kydex sheath, but a call to Normark or another kydex sheath maker will solve that. Good luck on your search.

If diving is a priority from the list, I would suggest the Intrepid, from Buck, it was mentioned in your first thread.

I find that a smaller knife, being easier to carry and so forth, is often a good baseline choice, I suggest the Camillus Talon in 154CM special version from www.1sks.com. $100 and probably my next purchase.

If you are looking for a bigger knife, maybe the Magnum Camp Knife from Camillus/Becker, www.1sks.com has that too, ~$80?

If big is your desire, then one of the other Camillus/Becker products might suit you. BTW, I have a Machax for sale/trade, email me if I can help.

If you want something 'sexier', maybe the Camillus CUDA Terzuola CQB.

My final suggestion..... Buy my knife, well, OK, maybe not. If not, then go to www.bladeforums.com/links and follow the links to every single manufacturer and dealer, feast your eyes on many images, read, and somewhere in there, you will have succumbed to the dark side. "Luke, I am your father."
