Been looking at some Fight'n Rooster knives on the web - they seem like great knives: very traditional almost retro in their handle material/pattern use. Anybody have experience what is the quality like? Are they users or a collector's piece?

Hi Neil,

Fighting Rooster is on par with BullDog brand for the most part, with some exceptions. As a matter of fact, I believe FR, BullDog, etc.... are all build by the same factory(Olbertz). If I had to pick a user, I'd still pick a plainer Eye Brand, etc....

That being said, they are widely collected because of the wide variety of patterns, etches, etc....:).

Thanks Bob. I think you are correct about the Olbertz factory. Know anyhere that sells them direct? doing a web search I found a bunch on ebay that were being sold seemingly by the factory out of Lebanon, TN.
That being said I have heard a lot about the Eye Brand models, need to pick one up sometime!Thx

Hi Neal,

The model's I've seen were at shows, Ebay, etc.... I've never seen a factory catalog, website, etc.... for this brand, but their homebase is in Tenn., so may be all the one's that show up on Ebay were bought factory direct:).

The most current address I have is:

Frank Buster Cutlery Co.
P.O. Box 936 .
Lebanon, TN .
37087 .

There is a small storefront in Lebannon but FR's are mostly sold via eBay.

I have a small two blade peanut. The jigged bone handles don't match front-to-back and the bolsters are of different length (really weird, like they picked up the wrong-end bolsters when they made the knife?!). Anyway, straight on it's absolutely gorgeous and sees some pocket time.

If you're buying off of eBay see if the seller has more than just a shield-side picture to make the the scales match. Otherwise these are nice little knives.

Thats really odd. I remember the ones made back in the late 70's early 80's were of good quality. I know some german firms have slipped on quality the last 7, 0r 8yrs. did you buy it from a reputable place? There are alot of people out there that make fakes, and alter other knives to cheap people out of their money. I once had seen a case knife at a flea market with parker second cut bone stag for the scales. I immediately recognized someone had reground a case trapper blade to fit a parker trapper frame, with the case blade being the only thing not original. he had at least 25 of these made up. He even had a fake pattern number on the box!!
after questioning him i walked away. strangely later I came back 20 minutes, he was gone, and the flea market didnt close for another 2 hours, or so!!!

It's hard to say who's reputable when you're buying off of eBay. That's an unfortunate downside that seems to balance the variety you can find over there. I suppose if I'm going to be discussing this FR peanut I should also mention that the main blade is ground poorly such that the edge curves a bit towards the tip while the spine is good and straight.

Like I said, if you open the blades and display it in a case it's absolutely beautiful. I wonder if these knives aren't made to be collected and displayed rather than used?

Anyway, if you're buying a slipjoint online see if you can have them hand pick one for you and stress what you want (good springs, nicely matched handle material, etc) and of course make sure you can return it if you're not happy.

I've noticed that Bulldogs seem to be less expensive than Fight'n Roosters for what appears to be an identical knife. I have a 4" celluloid Bulldog stockman. I use it for every day office (light use) carry. It holds a wicked edge and is a beautiful knife.

I have a large collection of Fight'n Roosters and have never found any of the flaws that were mentioned here. Actually, I have not found any major flaws that were do to craftmanship. As far as any recently made knives go, I can't say for sure. Mine are most 80's and early 90's.
