File Knife Maker?

Hi guys.

I fell in love with a little file knife by William Hampton (at https://www.arizonacustomknives.com/index.php/knives-by-maker/hampton-william/175351.html), but he seemed to have disappeared. After ACK contacted him, I received a terse 5-word reply - "I don't make knives anymore." Which is sad.

So, does anyone here either make really good file knives, or know of someone who makes them?

I'm not looking to outright copy Bill's knife. But, I wanted something made up with a 3" blade, with a finger choil, and a handle length of 3-3.5". I want red handles - kirinite, CTek or if I have to, micarta - that are preferably detachable, maybe a bolster, and I want it made out of a fairly fine-toothed file.

My maybes so far are: Creek Cutler, Michael Morris Knives, and DT Knives.

Cheers.

Oeh oeh me me!

I make file (and rasp) knives on a regular basis. Clean fun :-).

I've not done Detachable scales before. But it's just a matter of getting the right bolts so should not be a problem.

Hey, thanks for the keen hands up! I'll let you know in the next week what I decide to do.

But what do you reckon? Is it worth making the scales detachable so I could deal with any future corrosion, or is a patina/surface coating and oil good enough? Because pins I think are better.

Is the corrosion the reason that you want detachable scales? I do not see that as a problem. The reason being that you when you glue the scales ( in addition to pinning) you effectly seal the edges between scales/tang. If no oxygen can get in...no oxydation (corrosion/rust) can take place.

So yeah..if that's your reason I wouldn't hold too hard/fast on to that criterium.

As a bonus...here's a rasp bowie I'm currently working on.
