Hi everyone, this is my first time venturing over to this section of the forum and I thought I'd share my project I just finished. This is an old Nicholson USA file I stashed in a drawer specifically for making a knife. The handles are black canvas micarta with 1/4 inch aluminum pins. This project started because I wanted a knife with rediculous edge retention but I don't really have the funds to spend $150 plus on a production knife. I bought an Izula a while back and I love everything about it but I just wasn't completely happy with the edge retention. This one I made just laughs at cardboard and keeps on slicing. I hope you like it. Don't be too critical, it's my first time :)

No need to laugh at you at all. You did a great job and sounds like you made a very functional knife. Be proud of yourself the mirror polish is an excellent choice!

Thank you! The mirror polish just kind of happened. I used my Harbor Freight belt sander for all the grinding. I used 40, 80, 120, 320, 400, and 600 grit belts. Then I hand sanded some with 800 grit. Then a good solid buffing with some green compound brought out a nice little shine. Oh, and the UNC duct tape is my wife's, not mine :)

Do you have a 1x30 harbor frieght sander or the combo sander with the 4x36" belt and 6" disc? I've done some amature stuff on the 4x36 but it almost seems to slow to take off decent amounts of material.

My wife is definitely cool! :)

I have the 1x30 sander. It's definitely slow going but it got the job done. I did all the work to the file in its hardened state so that made it slower but now I know it is definitely possible
