What are your thoughts on knives made from files such as Anza or other brands? pros/cons

I have owned over 100 Anza knives since they started, all very sharp, all made to be used. Charlie has made 3 customs for me in the last year, all great knives. They do rust and with the indentations from the teeth it's difficult to keep protection in grooves.
For the money they are a very good deal. IMHO.

Anza? good stuff! one of the most overlooked knives out there, IMHO. I do think they're kinda butt ugly with the Rainbow Brite colered laminated handles, but beyond that, they're great knives.

Even better than those are the ones that Sarge and Andy have made from files. beautiful, lookin' stuff that made the hair leap off my forearm just from looking at the pictures.

Going one step beyond that is making one with your own ten thumbs, it's alot easier than you'd think, funner than you'd expect, and it's a well covered topic here in the Cantina.

This thread here has links to the first ones I did, as well as Sarge's original Po' Boy thread.

My buddy made me one from a Nicholson file . Sharp and neat looking . Like a long patch knife . He left the teeth on the handle and it makes a good fire striker . Its pretty hard and he told me to not do a lot of prying with it .

For 18 bucks I,m not crying . When he makes some more I want to get slightly smaller ones to use as trade knives .

I don't have any made from Anza files but the file knives I do have are able too take a very fine edge and stay sharp for a good while.  :D

Files make good sharp knives. I handled a few of those Anzas at the blade show. Good for the money. I agree about the aesthetics though. I know a guy who makes them look clumsy and poorly executed. Wait for it...... our own Sarge, of course.

I reckon old files make some pretty good knives ;) :D

They turn out sharp and pointy

Pretty well balanced too

And you can use other old files to fancy 'em up

Wow. Again. Sarge's stuff blows Anza away.

I got a hold of some Nicholson file blanks and that lets you make a knife with a smooth finish.

Where, how many, and would you be interested in selling one?

Thanks Andy. My big old biscuit grabbers make this knife look dinky, but the blade is 5 1/2" long (Texas legal), and the handle is 4 1/2". Handle is some more of that very hard and superfine grained hickory I stumbled across, but that board is about all used up (made handles for three knives so far). That handle looks simple, but with them nice curves and swells, you can really hang onto it.

This one will be tucked down in my high topped medieval boot when I head to the renaissance festival. Even in costume, when folks are wearing all sorts of gawdawful swords and daggers, I like to have a real knife stashed and handy. ;)

Made my first from a Nicholson file over the weekend ... did a fine job cutting up and boning the chicken that went on the barbeque last night. No pics yet, but maybe later ...

Its a sweetie Sarge. Reminds me of a patch knife just a little long. Real handy lookin sun of a gun.

In order to get Nicholson file blanks I had to get a sales tax license and buy in quantity. If you are interested in what I have click on my name in this post and send me an email.
