Just a quick question; how do you keep your files from rusting and becoming "dull?"

Thanks,
Jim L.

Oil them (mineral oil is cheap and good for everything, WD-40 would work too, store them somewhere dry, and use them frequently enough to keep rust from forming.

Here's something weird, remember Slick-50? There once was a spray bottle form of this elixer. I've used it on metals and it seems to penetrate like nothing else I've used. Really seems to condition metal. ***If you spray this on plastic, it will cause it to crack-up to a point of total deformation***

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I know that Oil + Steel = >Rust.
I was wondering about what I could use that won't trap the filings on the file during use; or should I even worry about that?

You might want to wipe off the oil when in use, or find a dry protectant that doesn't attract dirt (Tuf-Cloth, Eezox come to mind.)

Wrap the files in rust preventing VPI paper [ vapor phase inhibitor] .As far as dull - files do wear out , they really do !Then you can make blades from them !

Wire brush to clean it and a quick spray of WD40 if its going to be stored for any length of time.

Thanks for the help, guys! I have a metric butt-load of Slick 50 and tried that.
Even with wiping the file off well (I thought) it still gummed up fairly quick when work with brass.
Luckily, wire brushing took care of the "clog" super quick. One positive is that my files look damn-near new!

As many have said, store files in a dry place and oil them. If you are having problems with files loading up with filings and crud, try spaying them with cutting oil and wipe them off, quick and easy clean.

Jim L, here's another one I just thought of. Next time you change your car's oil, let the file (or anyother metal tool) soak in that old oil. I think it is carbon deposits that do the trick. (should have said to soak file in Slick 50)

Chalk or soapstone will keep the metal out of the teeth.

Sprinkle baby powder on your tools and in the drawers of your toolbox. You can also throw in some chalk into the drawers too.

 I know that chalk can be used as a desicant, but what does the baby powder do except absorb the oil...........Ahhhhh:D
