file sharpening question

I'm getting a Kabar heavy bowie short in about a week and after buying that,don't really have the funds for a sharpening stone.So i was wondering,could i use a file for a rough sharpening and a strop for touchups? if so what kind of file would you suggest?

You could probably get away with a Nicholsons Mill Bastard file. It won't give you the greatest edge, but considering the knife I can't imagine it being that bad.

I use a single cut bastard file and can shave the hair from my arms. I would like to get a smooth file and see how much further that refines the edge. This edge is a little rough on strop surfaces, get your self some sandpaper too.

ok bastard file it is.Will also get a pack of progressively finer grits of sandpaper and then use a strop
