Are you typing with your elbows?:p

Diamond files are the way to go. Helps with preventing skipping by adding more control.

Nah, I did mine with just a Craftsman file.
Just go VERY slow at first. and make sure you only cut FORWARD with the file. Don't drag it backwards as it flattens the teeth of the file. And make sure you stay in one spot! Once you start to cut a trough, it becomes easier to control.
If the knife is a user and you really dont want to do it all by hand, you can use an electric chainsaw sharpener. It's just a little cylinderical grinding stone. It can be chucked into a drill or a dremmel. Those get the job done much faster once you get started with the file. But you MUST be very careful not to be too agressive and remove too much metal. So lift the stone every few seconds to see the progress.
I'm sure Diamond files will work wonders too!
Good luck!

I want to lay into a smatchet with cuts similar to the busse 'flying' stuff, which really inspired me...

but i am wondering, shoudl i go round or triangle? any advantage either way?

better ask him for his porfolio of pictures before you commit:D , and make sure he isn't GUI or worse GWI. :D
