on a lot of knives with file work it looks like it has been filled with something if so what and how do you do it or is it just the colour reflecking from hand thanks scott

Many people, like me, allow the filework under scales to fill with colored epoxy that affixes the scales. My preferred coloring agent is a dry powder for that purpose available from the knifemaker supply houses; I think I got mine from K&G. I've also used liquid epoxy colorants and Testor's model paint, both of which worked fine as far as I could tell.
