off both sides. Now I have approximately 1/2" on the blade where it forms an edge. Will this be detrimental during heat treating?

Man, filing is hard work. Really thinking about buying a Cootes grinder.

No big deal. I do that all of the time, worse with the grinder! just file the edge off...put the file edge perpendicular to the edge so it forms a T and just flatten the edge with a few strokes. Use a smooth file and smooth the edge out all around so it wont create stress risers. Good Luck!

Don't worry. Readjust the edge like Taz said and then move on. Just be sure to stop and check the edge thickness frequently so you don't make the same mistake twice.
