I would like to try filework but I am not a knifemaker so I cannot do that before hardening. I think I see an opportunity in the form of a Lauri progressive-tempered blade; quoting ThompsonsKnives.com: "Lauri of Finland has perfected the process to temper the spine to a utilitarian hardness of RC52 while the edge is hardened to an incredible RC63."

Can I do filework on the spine of one of these blades without damaging files? Is the hardness going to make this very difficult?

The files will be harder than 52 HRC, but will not cut the steel well. You'll probably dull them really quickly too. If you get a set of good diamond files that should work, or use a dremel

Chainsaw file are enough cheap so you don t need to worry how long they will last .Sandvik have good one and I think that they will done job on 52 RC spine

Dremel, carbide burrs and a cut off wheel. Keep it cool.
