I am thinking of doing some filework on a folder to practice (Don't worry, it is a $10 Frost Sowbelly) How do you disassemble one?

Thanks,

HWPAINTBALLER, thank you very much for your reply.

I'm sorry, I should have prefaced this.

I am very mechanically inclined. I know how to assemble and disassemble things, especially those screwed together.

My question is more along the thought of, do you use a purpose built tool to tap out the pins, (like a chain breaker type tool) how do you deal with replacement of the peened over pin or pins you must grind down that go through the spring etc.

Basically, how do you disassemble/reassemble without busting up the bone scales and twisting the liners to oblivion?

If you want to remove the scales, do you drill out and replace?

The scales probably have a hidden pin or since it was a 10 dollar knife it may have just been glued. What I normally to do knives like these to separate them is stick a flat screwdriver in horizontally and twist it vertically trying to make the two sides want to separate from each other, usually getting it apart is the easy part and putting it back together is a PITA, but good luck

Also you can use a hammer and a small headed screwdriver (something smaller than the pin) and try tapping the pins out.

Dremil the head off the pivot pin and drive it thru the springs.Sometimes you'll still crack the bone, but that's how i do it.
