Filework newbie

I've decided to attempt adding some filework to some productions blades for practice. As long as they are the right size and shape, will any file do? Any ideas where I could buy some really small round files?

Jewelry supply stores will carry a selection of small needle files.

Don't start on knives. Go to a hardware store and get some cheap steel to practice on.
Needle files can generally be bought there, too. Working on hardened blades is hard on files, so you might look into a set of diamond needle files.
