Fileworked logo...what do ya think?

Well I'm officially pretending to be a knifemaker now, and I got a few pictures to share.

I posted a question awhile back about putting my last name into the filework on a knife and most seemed to think it was a pretty good idea. So I did it on a few, and have come to the conclusion that its not as easy as I thought it would be, but I like the results.
I've only done it on 2 fixed blades, so far. I want to do it for folders too but that only works out if its one that will have a full backspacer. I could put it on the blade, but I don't think I want to do that if I can put it somewhere else.

Lets see if I can make this work :

The knife is a paring knife I made for my sister. Its 440C heat treated with a torch. Black linen micarta scales.
About 7.5" oal with about a 3" blade. I used full .125" stock because I didn't want to pay more for thinner stock and it works better for filework. So I ground the blade extra thin. Added 30-45 minutes extra time at the grinder but worked out pretty well.

Heres a side view :

And the spine with some more filework

It warped a little on me when I quenched it (forgot to normalize  ) but I didn't have the guts to try and bend it back. I didn't think it was worth it no worse than it is.

what ever trips your trigger! bet your sister gets alot of use out of that little worker!

As far as I know you have developed an expression of original thought in the world of knives. Congradulations!

Thanks guys
I've had one or two people have trouble seeing what it says first off, but other than that everyone seems to like it. Want some feed back other than family though as they either view me as the family psycho (HE MAKES KNIVES! ) and don't want to make me mad...or they'd want to hang it on the fridge with my report card even if I showed em a rusty spike with a bindertwine cordwrap handle ;)

Matt, I really like that, and it is really original, too. If you can't get it, invent it, huh? I have tossed the logo idea around a lot, never considered what you came up with. Pretty cool!

Matt that's cool, and a nice little knife too! I suspect you'll figure out ways to develop this idea further, so much potential. You're lucky to have a name you can do it with, and I hope to see it on a lot more knives over the years. Good job!

Matt Great Idea.

Purhaps you could save yourself some time by making a stencil negative so that you could etch in and leave your name high. You could purhaps put a layer of pvc electrical tape and cut out of that.
then etch as a trial on the edge of a piece of scrap bar stock.

Thanks for all the kind words
I'm glad it passes inspection.

Reg, thats a good idea. I do need to take the time to at least lay out a pattern I can scribe in. I did the first one after practicing on scrap steel with different ideas for about 4 hours. This one took me about 45 minutes, but isn't quite as clean as the first one, I should have practiced more :)
Also going to play around with different sized files and stuff. Did all of this one with a chainsaw file and a cut off wheel in a dremel.

Yeah, I consider myself real lucky on the name. Some of you fellas would be halfway around the handle before you finished ;)

I had thought about carving lettering on the spine of a blade, but didn't get as far as thinking about it being my logo. Or actually doing it for that matter. I like it, and am a little jealous. I do all my filework with a hacksaw for the straight lines and I have 2 sets of jewlers needle files for everything else. The second set is so I can modify files as needed (safe sides and in the future curved files). I think that the filework might just be my favorite part of the whole process, though the initial grind is right up there.

I like filework too. I made 2 or 3 knives with it and then left it off of one that I was just going to use as a work knife. I hate the thing, just too plain. Its since undergone a substantial amount of abusive testing :) I do at least some filework on everything now.
