What type of file is best for filings guards and can I get them at sears?

Just looking for a couple to get me started......

Thats what I may look for at the flea market in Fla......see you turkeys next week :D

Cant wait to get back and get my hands duuurty!!

I use needle files for the most part, pluss a couple of modified regular files that I ground one side or the other off of to get in the slot, pluss a round file that I ground flats on either side to go lenthwise.

I bought most of mine at Sears, just keep the reciet and when you break or wear them out they will replace them.

Cant' have to many files, but a set of needle files will get you started.

Brownells has a selection of files that is just too cool for knifework. Habilis makes a set, too, that is intermediate sized, that I use a lot. They're in one of the knifemakers' catalogs, either Koval or Sheffield. I have probably 2-300 files, most of which I actually use, many of which I've modified for specisic tasks, ground a clean flat on, bent, etc.

Can't have enough files!!! The newest acquisition was a set of diamond riffle files I got from a carving place. Way cool! Tooltime!!

dlpierson...can you post the link again? I cant get it to work...Thanks for the help guys.

Try this one:

File

For some reason the board software chops it short if you paste in a long url and you also use the url as the displayed text.

Thanks......

Now I need to get to work on learning how to make the fittings.

That seems to be the hard part.....

Point files (showing my age here  ) are real handy for thin slots - most auto supply stores still carry them for us old dinosaurs.

I'll check for those also.........

I just need to get my guardless blades done ;)

Here's a two part approach:

Auger Bit File

If that doesn't work:

1. Go to MSC Home Page

2. Put "auger bit file" in the quick search box and press the go button.

3. It will display a set of controls to select the type of file you want to look at because it didn't understand the question

4. That's OK, just select Auger Bit from the "Type" section widget it kindly put up. There's only one of them :D

Thanks guys. I plan on trying the guard thing before too long....now I need magnifing glasses
