I was wondering what the general opinion of Filipino handmade balisongs is. I have a lot of them straight from Batangas that have been in the family for a long time. Yes I am Filipino

My general opinion is that Filipino balisongs are pretty much collector's items cause it's made 'at the source', is handmade and has its own charm in my own opinion I would rather carry a jaguar for practical purposes. Everyone who's asked me this question I tell them straight up, and noone has really complained cause they collect them with that in mind.

I think the new stock Batnaggas Balisongs are pretty sturdy.. much better than the WW2 era stuffskies in both design and fit and finish..

IN american I htink there are more GI bringbacks than Batanggas. WHat is cool abotu batanggas now is that they are doign lots of new developments liek pocket clips, finger grooves as well as batangueno's Weehawk tanto #1

Im sorry I dont post here often cause, well I dont like benchmade balis, and their ilk. My favourite balisong is a bataangas made bali my tito gave me after all mine got nabbed by customs (I lost three that day ;( It has buffalo horn inserts, the blade is real nice mirror polish, and lots of other little embellishments that I like (theres even stuuf on the latch). Its the most solid bali Ive ever handled, yes I know BMs are good but they lack the soul that I find in a good FHM. Anyways this was my titos personal bali that he gave to me. It was the best of a custom order of a hundred balis he brought back to the states from Bataangas. He was sold all the pieces in that order for about $30 each in 92, and he thought he was ripping people off. Since that custom order only costed him $100, thats about $1 a bali. Now mind you these werent the normal junky FHMs you see alota people posting. Much better fit and finish (how many FHMs do you know of that are on the market here in the states have mirror finishes).

No digi cam. Ive noticed that its also hard to distinguish between kamogoong wood and buffalo horn. If it wasnt for the fact that A. I was told it was buffalo horn by my tito and B I did the needle test I would have guessed it was kamogoong wood.
 
I'm not sure but I'm guessing it means brother. Could be wrong though, could mean father, cousin, or granddad but my guess is brother.
 
My house mate recently vacationed in the Filipins with his girlfriend and her family. He brought back some balis he bought on the resort island (name escapes me). They're of low qualtiy unfontunatly. I would imagine that there are quality knife smiths in the country, but my friend didn't have the time to seek one out.

LOL...i see that you filipinos there are planning to get together. Sali ako dyan...i have to bring some san miguel beers and balisongs when i go to the states this june.

There are quite a few decent smiths in the Philipines. However if you want something good you gotta A. look, and B. place a custom order (best way to ensure quality). The custom orders arent too expensive especially now with the exchange rates being as they are. Like I said before in early 92 my tito got a custom order made of 100 balis for $100. It took about two weeks to finish, and they turned out great.
