Filipino grip?

My thoughts.

I train primarily with the filipino grip. Obviously, a wave doesnt facilitate this. I can even see getting my thumb flexors seriously jacked up in a confrontation.

Truth be told, even during most utility cutting, the wave is a bit oddly placed for me to use my thumb. Too far rear for good saber grip, too far forward for filipino. Never was completely comfy holding the waves. My next will probably be one of the waveless models. And honestly, as cool and fun as the wave is, in practicality im far more proficient and comfortable drawing my blade and inertial opening it reliably. My waving failure rate when not under duress is probly 10 percent, depending on the pants. Not to mention what happens when you dont want the blade to open or you get pinned or otherwise jammed. Simpler is better.

Considering Mr. Emerson trained under Inosanto, im surprised the wave isnt adapted better for a filipino grip. Tho i admit im ignorant to either of their techniques or philosophy.

Anybody familiar with the Emerson combat method?

Can't you pinch up on the blade, for utility work?

Utility work ain't combat work. ;)
The thumb ramp/wave area works just fine for my hand, I don't usually try to cover the entire blade length with my thumb. That would be the only way I can see it would be uncomfortable. Simpler is better, but practice makes perfect.

I am not much into the martial arts thing, just staying alive, by trying to avoid troble. Maybe it is just me, my age, or having been to war and back. But Mr. Emerson did a U-Tube about surviving the kill, or killing zone. Be prepart to become, what is trying to kill you only if nessessary. Being able to become what is nessessary only as a last resort.

I tend to always be in the Yellow Red Zone in strange situations, where I am around strangers. Aware of where exits are, places to hid, and as a last resort do have a plan to use what ever is available as a weapon.

Navy S.E.A.L.s, S.A.S., and some other well trained forces trust the Enerson design. Work with what you have at hand, and if possible retreat ois what you have to deal with.

Thoughts form a guy who has been to war, worked in South CentralL L.A. with nothing more in the old day but Badge, Wheel Gun, Few Extra Rounds of Ammo, Handcuffs, Radio, and Baton. Brain was the best too to stay out of bad situations. Radio was use to call calvery if S**T Happen.
