Hi!

I´m new to this forum, so if I ask things that you already discussed, please excuse me!

I wonder if anyone have used their skills in FMA in real self defence situations? How did it turn out? Did it work?

One of my training partners, who has had quite a bit of experience under Dan Inosanto and Paul Vunak, has been attacked twice in the last year or two. The first time he was jumped by four gang bangers trying to rob him outside a check cashing facility. He used a straight blast to push back the first, head butted the second, elbowed the third, and was staggered by a nasty right cross from the fourth. Sent him to the hospital, but no permanent injury (they took off---didn't rob him or stomp him).

About a year later a gang banger sucker punched him and he dropped to his knees. The scumbag was trying to kick him but he popped up, grabbed the guy's ears, and smashed his face with a headbutt. There was a big spray of blood as the bad guy's nose broke, and the dirtbag ran off.

I have had many students use their FMA training in real life.. Most of my students have been/are Military Law Enforcement officers, so they have to know something that they can use when the need arises.
One of my students was attacked on a bus by an individual who was going to stab them, my student deflected the attack, did a head twist and knee smashed the attacker's face. There was no retribution on my student as the attack was witnessed by the bus driver and several other students. Another one of my students was working his patrol (LEO) when he had to respond to an accident where the driver of a car had been arguing with another person.. When he rolled up, he noticed that the driver of the car was being aggressive towards the medics and another LEO. When the guy attacked the other officer, my student did a bicep roll from dumog and swept the guy to the ground.. When they ran a back ground check on the guy, he was known to be a trouble maker and was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault and battery on a federal officer.

Unfortunately, in my line of work there are more opportunities for violence and trouble than the average person might encounter... On more occassions than I care to count I have had to use my FMA (and other) skills on various levels. On more than one occassion I have had to deploy and use a combat folder and I definitely used Filipino bladework in those situations - in one situation, a quick gunting/arm cut to the inside of the elbow followed with a head manipulation to take the BG to the ground. In that case it turned out the BG was wanted for war crimes and besides the makeshift "load" in his hand he had a nice .45 at the back of his belt... In one situation I ended up using a maglite as a makeshift fighting stick and blocked. checked and stripped a piece of tree that someone was interested in connecting with my head - and everyone thinks that politics is boring... not when you are in post-conflict countries...

Happily, more often than not the simple act of avoiding the fight works and any small display of skill and the fact that you are not afraid (which you usually really are anyway - you just don't show it) ends the fight. On MANY occassions, the sheer act of pulling whatever folder I have in my pocket that day has caused the BG to stop, reconsider and then go the other way...As far as I am concerned this is the best way to end a fight!

In Germany in 1985 I used abanicos/witiks and redondas to fend off a vampire thats had long plagued this village. In the middle of combat I placed my rattan sticks in the form of a crucifix and Count Vlargon recoiled in horror. Then my assistant, Santa Claus drove a stake through his heart. Do not misuse the info. I have shared

A while back my friend was attacked while at an ATM. The BG tried to sucker punch him first and was countered with a block-n-hit known as Tan Sao (W.C./JKD guys should know this one). Then my friend saw him reach for a knife in a belt holster and drew his Delica immediately. Too bad the BG didn't notice, cause once he swung on a horizontal #1/high #3 he got cut with a gunting maneuver. It cut through the BG's leather jacket and right into the wrist:eek:.

The BG ended up dropping the knife and took off running while holding his bleeding arm.

My friend said it was a strange moment because he felt calm when it happened but his senses went into hyper-sensitivity.
