machine26, I just bought this exact bag from Howe's Knife Shop in Michigan for our day hikes. It will have the following:
Firesteel & Striker / Bic Lighter
Matches & Container
PJCB & Tinder Quick Fire Tabs
Photon Freedom Micro-Light II / Fenix TA-20
Emergency Poncho & AMK Heatsheet
#550 8-strand Para-Cord
3x5 Starflash Mirror / Suunto MC-2-G Compass
Duct Tape & Snare Wire
Nalgene Bottle / MP-1 Tablets / Frontier Survival Straw
Bouillon Cubes / Soup Packs / Tea Bags
Gerber MP600 Multi-tool / Entrek 11 Bravo Fixed Blade
Tops Folding Saw / Pocket 1st Aid Kit
Midland GTX-1000-VP-4 2-Way Radio
Sierra Cup / Esbit Folding Stove
2 Day's Daily Maint. Med's
Seems like a lot, but my wife is disabled with a back injury, & any type of hike we take could turn into an overnighter very quickly, hence the "over packing" even for just a small day hike. The bag is lying on the floor next to me now, great bag for the price. Thanks for posting, should get some great ideas off this thread.
Be safe.

Tea and germ killer. Lemon juice concentrate is good to clean small wounds.

mmm, bags... just got a lunada, which i'm using as a sorta light as possible (ie: it's not stuff with shit 24x7, "book bag", and "holster"... which reminds me that i want to order some grimlocs and some loop field goodies.

also have a standard (jumbo?) versipack, which is stuffed with a lot of stuff. i could probably list it from memory, but it's my favorite grab one bag, and be sure to have enough to survive the daily rigors of life, or a weekend, or longer without too much pain, and quite possibly outdoors too (optimized more for urban survival)... for zombies and bugouts, i'd rely on my bugout-closet to throw something much more keen together and what i keep in my car full-time.

i LOVE me my bags. maxpedition has a great selection. got a pygmy/baby condor on clearance for a super low price some 4 years ago, basically average school sized-backpack size sweet. it still looks new. i'm not trying hard enough. i need to find more of these things too :> i love all their gear.

i think that about covers it without going into great detail or praise of too many bag whoring.

though believe it or not, i don't yet have either version of the Becker designed patrol packs, or a Kifaru. i must be slipping in my old age. though i should do something about the Becker pack sooner than later :0

-Snare wire and a -packet of Kleenex (additional fire starter). Balls of frozen\wet grass are hard on the hoop when you just HAVE to go. -Hand crank flash light.

I believe this combo should cover most needs, you have a fire starter, good medium blade, stone for keeping an edge on that BK2, pack saw, a bottle for boiling and storing water, a compass, and a small bivy for warmth at night.

1. BK2
2. Small Sil-tarp
3. Strikeforce Fire Starter
4. Folding saw
5. Steel water bottle
6. Cordage (Paracord/Bankline)
7. Compass
8. AMK Bivy 2.0
9. Small sharpening stone for the BK2
