Just joined the forum, this being my first post. Hope I am asking these questions in the right spot. Quick bit of info - a friend gave me a hunting knife blank, I made a handle for it, and am excited to try a few more handles/maybe eventually expand into blade making.

So, I have a question... I am looking for a couple quality fillet knife blade blanks to be made into full fledged knives for gifts. I am interested in making the actual blades, but will have to give it some time (between hunting, fishing, beer brewing, knife handle making and general home chores, I have enough hobbies at this time). I have looked at some of the knife making supply websites, and was not overly impressed with the options that I have seen.

I would like to find 6-8 inch blades, used for freshwater only (very rare chance for salt water), and something that will hold an edge very well. Used mostly for crappie, bluegill, and bass. Priced relatively well (i.e. best quality for best price), but I am open to just about any options. I am not exactly sure on all of the specifics as far as good, better, best quality steel etc., but if anyone has the time to help me understand, it would be greatly appreciated. Anything else that may be beneficial to my new knife making/wood handle adventures, I am all ears.

Thank you all for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

I own one of those rapala knives, and it works great! However, I don't believe I can get just the blade. I am looking specifically for blanks so that I can fabricate the handle for them. Thanks for your suggestion.

So, I've seen these blade blanks in AUS8 and 440C. Is one functionally better than the other? And, do you think they really are what they say-or is that iffy on imported stuff like this?

The major knife supply sources usually know what they are made of. AUS-8 vs 440C doesn't matter, as they are virtually the same thing. Both make a serviceable knife with proper HT. Getting a blade with cryo treatment is worth the extra money.
