I am looking for a new fillet knife. I'd like the blade to be about 4 inches long, maybe a little longer, but not past 6-7 inches. So far the only one I can find rapala's fish'n'fillet.

any suggestions?

You might try the kitchen type makers, like Russell Dexter (or Dexter Russell, I can never remember).
Or the small Kommer from CRKT is something like 4.5", I think.

Sorry, can't offer many suggestions - but I'm interested as well. The one I use most is a folder made by case. I can't remember the model, its long been discontinued. The really neat part is the handle halves hinge apart to clean gunk from the inside.

Opinel makes one that looks promising, but I've not tried one.

Martiinni,Normark,Buck Clearwater with Sandvik steel, if you got the money and can find one Buck 126 Cabelas Alaskan Guide Filet Knife S30V. Martiinni are my favorite with the wood handles though.$10 and comes with cereamic sharpner. I'd definately get a 7 incher if your planning on using it for filleting fish.

Do you like flex or no? I find that to be the most important question. The Rapala, Buck (I think), and some of the other big names seem preferred by those who like flex. My grandfather (who taught me to fish) came from that camp. Over the years though, I have discovered I do not like flex. I want a laser that points and cuts. I bought a Knives of Alaska Steelheader 3-4 years ago, and I couldn't be happier. I think it's a 6 inch blade.

I really like the way the Helle Hellefisk looks. 4 5'8" blade of Sanvik 12C27 with a traditional cork handle.

I use a Knives of Alaska Steelheader and love it but I'm always looking for something new...

Thanks for all the quick responses

I have been looking at the opinel no10 slim as it has the ideal blade size and profile, and also folds. But I've also eyed the buck 021 bait knife.

I have a few questions. Is opinel sold in just any old store like cabelas, sportsmans warehouse, walmart or such? Has anyone used the buck 021 before? how well did it perform?

RRaconteur: I am not really concerned with flex or not, I have used both, and usually just grab what is at hand so I haven't really developed a preference

I made my first canoe trip of the year yesterday and landed a smallmouth bass above average size for me, 16". And this morning I needed to fillet it and clean out my ice chest. What knife to use? A Safe-T-Grip Min-flex? A Max-flex? I dug into my box of knives missed by thieves and came up with a NIB GF-45. I'd wondered about this knife ever since I bought it back during the heyday of Schrade's liquidation when not only knives scrounged from the factory went to market, but new in the box knives came out of drawers and closets.

It worked quite well. I have no complaints though I was initially concerned by the short, stiff blade.

A cursory search shows that it was only cataloged 1983-1985. A marketing failure I suppose, though the MSRP was very reasonable at the time, about $25. They are still around if you want one. The graphite handles are very comfortable. The full name is Schrade GF-45 Grafillet Littlemouth. Blade is 4 1/2" of stainless steel.
