A new customer asked my if I can etch his logo on the knife blade that I am making for him, and then fill it in with colored epoxy to make it level to the blade. I'm not sure that I could etch it deep enough without interfering with the integrity of the blade so that the epoxy will stay. Has anyone ever tried this? Is it even worth experimenting with?

Not sure how deep your etch mark goes, but it should be doable. The use of colored "epoxy" should not trip you up.

Really, any durable colored paint (I do believe you can get access to epoxy based finishes for blades, metal etc).

Just think of it like antiquing. If you can get a deeper etch, try it, and rub some black, or other color paint in, and wipe off to see how it looks.

Thanks for the replies guys. He specifically asked for it to be smooth to the blade, not just a black etching (I can do that with the etching machine alone). I'll have to try it out on some scrap with the epoxy, otherwise I'm going to have to try some type of "building" paint with multiple layers.

Thanks guys - i'll have to try it out. Any idea what the shekf life of this stuff is? The only quote pot life on their site.

I have used "Bonanza Gold" to fill in my etch mainly in damascus to help it stand out more. I know it comes in Gold or Silver.
