I found this one in the bargan bin at my local Hollywood Video.
I had never heard of Bang Rajan, a small village which played a major role in the 1765 war between the Burmese and Siamese empires; and, the event which gives title to this film. Like Rorks Drift, The Alamo, or Bastogne, Bang Rajan tells the story of a desperate struggle destine to immortalize it's heroic defenders.
This movie was locally made in Bagkok back in 2000, and the DVD version is subtitiled in English. The actors are totally unknown to us, yet the acting is so good that you will have no problem following the story. This movie is truely a sleeper and a masterpiece. It is beautifully shot on location and features excellent and unrelenting action and drama worthy of Braveheart, or Lord of The Rings; yet, unlike those films, it is untainted by an overly hammy leading actor, or a corny and impossible love story. Even better, there is little or no computer generated effects, so what you see is what you get and it looks so much better.
Look closely and you will see plenty of well done martial arts (no Chinese puppet show here), a wide variety of realistically rendered swords, knives and other weapons; and, even a few gratuitous shots of the knifemakers at work (hmmmmmm).
I highly recommend this one. So, if you haven't done so already, you may want to race down to check this one out at your video store.
