Hi guys,

I missed Andy P's Filson-232 Medium field bag and I've started looking on the internet for one but as far as I can see most 'dealers' keep very near to the price that one sees on the filson website.

Does anybody know a shop that has a real good price on the Filson-232 Medium field bag? let's say nearer to $100 then to the $179 that I see on the Filson site.

Other possibility if anybody has one, knows about one that is for sale please let me know.
Filson bags seem to be almost heirloom articles so it should be possible to find a good/excellent used one.

It's hard to find a sizeable discount from Filson retailers :( . David Morgan has the Medium Field Bag for a little less. I think your best bet is looking for a preowned one. Good luck with your seach :) .

Hiya, Piet, long time no see! Hope all is well with you and yours.

Retailers that carry Filson usually discount just enough to make the tax bite of buying locally away, 10% if you are lucky. On the other hand, my wife considered less than $200 a good deal for a decent purse when she bought me a Med. Field Bag. Maybe because the red Coach Hobo bag I bought her was almost twice as much

All my best.

Hello James,

Nice to be hearing from you, yep it has been a long time mainly caused by the truckload of work that I seem to have each day of the week, relaxing a little on the BF often is not possible anymore.

James, I think I found an "dealer" who has a very nice price only $118 before taxes for the Filson 232 which is $60 below that what Filson charges :)
I wrote an email but haven't heard back from them yet.

James, your medium field bag can it hold "legal" sized paper, well in my case A4 (European) format paper which is about 12" long and 8.5" wide?
I haven't seen any picture that shows how the oval opening that Filson talks about looks.

The family is fine, kids in puberty, especially my daughter is something that I could miss ;) or go for a prolonged 3-4 year Alaska trip ;)

Hi guys,

After a lot of hard work searching the internet I tracked down an Filson dealer selling these wonderfull Medium Field Bags for only $118 instead of the $179 that is the suggested retail price.

The person I talked to was very helpfull, postage came to only $6 inside California and the tax was not to bad either but for out of state that would not have to be paid anyhow.

Can somebody please explain to me what exactly Bridle leather is?
my best guess is that it a kind of though, thick natural leather that can have 'scars' on it (I mean to say it is not smooth fashion leather) and is mainly used for "heavy" use, but again I do not really know.

I ask this because the sales person said that the leather on the Filson bags is "natural" and stiffer then what most people expect and can have 'flaws' not in quality but she meant like scars in the hide etc. and would benifit from use of leather oil.

Filson bridle leather is hard and stiff when you first get it. Feels closer to flexible plastic than leather. I found no scars on the leather of the small field bag I used to have, but the leather drinks up oil or conditioner like a sponge. Filson uses it for the buckle closures, and here it softens with use because you're flexing it so much. Leather conditioner would probably accomplish the same (avoid neatsfoot oil; I've heard some negative stuff about weakening the leather).

Don't worry Bagheera, the leather is as bombproof as the bags ;) . BTW, I love the glowrings and the firesteel!

Would you mind emailing me where you found your bag? I'd like to take a look myself.

Hello SteelDriver,

Send you an email, thanks for the info, I just received word that my medium field bag is on it's way to San Diego :)

Hopefully somewhere next week I'll have it in my hand in The Netherlands, should be perfect for carying my daily 'junk' to and from work and still habve space for some more outdoor related items.

Steeldriver, great you like the Glowrings and Firesteel.

Piet, glad to hear things are well, I hope everyone in your house survives puberty!

Legal size is a little large for the Med Field Bag, but your A4 sounds like it will fit. I hope you enjoy your bag! Any chance of a link to where you found it? Always looking for a bargain, thanks.

Hello James, Lenny,

The company can be found at:

http://www.lewis-lewis.net

and then choose "Price Guide" from the 'left' choices you have, this opens an PDF file and then open number 13 "Carying Bags and Cases and you'll find the price for the Filson #232 Medium Field Bag.

When you give them a call, just dial (805)644-7405 and ask for Tiki, she's the sales rep doing the sales in Ventura CA and a very nice lady.
If you wish you can mention my name to her so she knows that you found them through me ;)

I hope you guys will be able to get the Medium Field Bag, I haven't really looked at the other prices of Filson bags much but so they might be comparable to other dealers, however the Medium Field Bag is a lot cheaper.

Hey Bagheera!
You Da Man!
I ordered a Style 248 Large Travel Bag from Lewis-Lewis.
Great price, friendly people, prompt shipping.
This is my first piece of Filson luggage and all I can say is Wow!
This thing is way overbuilt.
I'm sure my great grand children will get much use out of it.
Looks like it'll survive a nuclear blast.
The only change I'd make to it is to put a zipper on one of the outside pockets for flight tix etc.
Other than that, I absolutely love the thing.
It's already loaded with my biking clothes.
Can't wait to start abusing it.
Now, I have to think of excuses to get more Filson.
I've been trying to overload my present briefcase, a nice Hartmann, in the hopes that it'll fall apart.
But I really want a Filson briefcase.
Good call on Lewis-Lewis buddy:D

HellO Lenny,

Great that I could be of service, I had hoped to have had my own Filson Medium Field Bag by now but the Hotel Del Coranado in San Diego, yep that super expensive one from several movies, messed up and a customer/friend visiting our annual conference there last week didn't receive the package with the bag from Lewis & Lewis :(

Tiki from Lewis & Lewis send the bag last week Monday and it arrived already Tuesday at the Hotel Del Coranado! then the front desk/whoever just forgot to notify my friend who was there, he even asked several times and they said nothing had arrived and even when he checked out Saturday still nothing :(

I called L&L Tuesday after my friend told me "no bag" rather disappointed after I called the hotel were I was told NO PACKAGE arrived and we need a tracking number. Tiki checked and spoke the Hotel and it was there just a day after she send it.
They wanted to return it, L&L crediting the Credit Card etc. but I gave the Hotel a call And asked if they could NOT return it but send it to our company in San Diego, could be done, they just needed my credit card number as they wanted to let me pay for it. Well I explained to them in polite language that THEY messed up and I could even ask them to send it to the Netherlands and pay for it so I wasn't going to pay for them sending it 10 miles down the road.
GRRRRRR :( I was really p.ss.d

Now I'll have to wait until june 15 for another colleague to bring it to the Netherlands.

Sometimes I just seem to run out of luck, Lenny I'm glad you like the bag.

What a Bummer!
I feel for you Bagheera.
But, I can guarantee you that the wait will be worth it!
Let me know how you like it when you finally get it.
Lenny

Sorry to hear about that Bagheera. I actually live about 5 minutes from the Filson production line / Factory store. I can't guarantee the best prices or anything, but if you ever need stuff and don't want to hassle with anyone, let me know. :)

I am in love with filson. I have a couple of bags, hats, coats, shirts, etc. I discovered them about 10 years ago and have never looked back, they make wonderfull products.

As to this bag in particular, I have been using one for about 2 years now, and I love it. It still looks new! I have been trying to break it in and get it that "cool used look", but I can't seem to! hehe ;)

Anyhow, hope it comes soon for you.

Lenny,

Will let you know what I think of the bag, just wished I had had it already as my other cheap shoulder bag is getting more and more duct tape applied to keep it from falling in pieces.

Verax, I received an Filson catalog within a week after I asked for one on their website and I would love to try some of their jackets, especially the woolen ones with the cape kind of shoulder piece.

I have had several Tenson jackets that cost well over $200 and each of them started to show heavy wear within a couple of years especially around the cuffs and the lining materials used (satin stuff) just always seems to tear at the seams or just "disintegrate".
Once the satin lining shrunk/partly melted when I had a handwarmer (the ones with a glowing coal bar inside) hanging from my neck in its carying bag during a hike in the wintertime.

I'll try finding an dealer for Filson clothing in the Netherlands so I can see/feel how it wears.

Bagheera,
I've had my eye on the Double Mackinaw Cruiser for a long time.
I'm fortunate in that there's a Filson Dealer about 1/2 hour away from me.
I tried on many of their coats and vests, but the Double Mack is the nicest by far.
Like their bags, it looks like it'll last forever.
Their Tin Cloth waxed cotton coats are "tank-like".
Very stiff when new, but they'll definitely break in.
Their zip in "Outfitter System" vests and liner jackets is a great idea that lets you custom tailor the coat to your needs.
Looking thru their catalog is dangerous for me.
I like virtually everything in there.
Keep checking E-Bay for good prices.
I've seen some nice deals on gently used pre-owned stuff.
But if possible, try to find a dealer to try stuff on first.
Keep us posted on what you buy in the future.
Lenny
