I am interested in buying a new Filson foul weather jacket, and would appreciate any comments you all have about this product. Thank you. :D

Thirty-two years ago my wife bought me a new Filson cruiser coat. The old one I had inherited from my father had seen better days. It was worn out after two generations of service. I've worn the new coat for every winter since my wife was so generous. I'll let my two boys hash out witch one of them gets it.

Filson stuff lasts.

I don't know anything about about their duck wear, but they've been selling it for 150 years.

I've had a trusty Filson wool vest for a very long time, I just love it. I've also got a wool jacket, wear them both everday this time of year. They make a great product, so I'm sure the foul weather jacket is top notch.

Just my $0.02

:D

I have a shelter cloth Packer Coat that has been seeing a lot of use the past few weeks. Good gear, but the seams need to be waxed every year or so to keep it water tight.

Filson now has a new CEO and also a 'creative directer' !!Looks like it's going to be a yuppie brand soon .

I noticed Filson now has imports in it's catalog.

Also I've found that they tend to fit shorter rounder people better then taller skinnier ones.

Oh, no! :( What about us TALL and ROUND people? ;)

I have no experience with Filson clothing but I own several of their bags. Once you get over the 'sticker shock', they are probably the toughest, longest-lasting non-tactical gear you can buy.

I have one Filson jacket, a Tin Cloth Cruiser. It's everything they say it is, and worth every penny.

Howver, I'm staying clear of the new "Lodge Wear" import line. I'll save my $$ and buy St. John's Bay (J.C. Penney's) or Eddie Bauer.

Best Wishes,
Bob

I bought a foul weather coat a few months ago and am very pleased with it. This may be the last year to buy made in USA Filson so if you want one-go for it.

They will continue to make the stuff that made them famous, but are "branching out" into their Lodge Wear line. This stuff looks like overpriced yuppie crap to me. I'm sure it is good quality, but WAY overpriced in my book. I noticed in the latest catalogue that they sent me that they are already putting about 1/3 of it on sale... which says to me that they aren't selling too well. I think there are also plans to include a womans line.:jerkit: Godot... as far as I know, they will not forgo their bread and butter made in the USA stuff. They are just seeing if expanding what they sell will be profitable for them.
My biggest gripe with Filson is that they do not have enough "Tall" stuff. I especially love their Safari cloth shirts... quite possibly the best damn shirts I have ever bought. I would buy all their colors in it if they would only make them in XXL-Tall. To their credit, they added several more colors in the talls on the Alaskan guide shirt, which is like a heavy flannel shirt.

Illiya... don't hestitate to buy the Foul Weather coat. Darn good stuff. I have two coats (double Mac wool coat, and a shelter cloth coat) three vests (two wool, one shelter cloth) four shirts (two safari cloth, one Alaskan, one feather cloth) two bags, about 7-10 hats, one sweater, and had two pairs of their socks... which were the ONLY thing to ever disappoint me about Filson. Drop me a PM if you want to talk Filson.

Boy, I really hope you're wrong about this!

Thank you all for the responses. I am now going to order their field jacket. I notice it is still made in the USA. Best regards. :)

This is covered in a thread over in Wilderness skills forum, by a thread started by K estela entitled CC Filson travel vest, or something like that. Do a search under Filson and you will find it.

I have the all season rain coat (among other products). Great looking, durable coat. Filson repaired a rip free of charge too. However, I have recently sent the jacket in for inspection because the water resistence is, at least in my opinion, vey disapointing. Still like their products and will be interested to see what they say after looking at the jacket. However, if you are really concerned about staying dry in more than a brief exposure, think gore tex or the like. Based on my experience with this jacket, I wouldn't trust the coat for truly foul weather. YMMV.

I did, thanks for that. I don't like the sounds of any of it one bit. I'm going to do a BIG Filson shopping spree VERY soon...

I like tin cloth products particularly because of their toughness and good look. (I have 3 tin cloth hats). I would agree with an earlier poster that if you truly want to keep dry in heavier rain think Goretex or some other 'petroleum' based material.

I have the double mackinaw cruiser, and a tin cloth hunting coat. They are a great product, will last many years if you take care of it. When ordered and received, if it doesn't fit, send it back and they will send you another size. They will even custom make a size for you, or do special alterations, for a fee of course.

They are a great company. I had a tin cloth baseball cap for many years and the leather adjusting strap broke free from where it was sewed to the cap. I called them and they sent me a new one no questions asked.

i too have a cruiser jacket that i cruise timber in; it has to be cold; if the weather is warmer than 45 i get hot. i also have their tin chaps and cruising vest which i like very much. had a fellow forester buy a new jacket on ebay for one half the new price just recently.
