I'm interested in picking up a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser to become my general, everyday, wear it for everything, winter coat. Any thoughts or opinions? Also, can anyone make any comments about sizing? I wear a 42R suit (41" chest), so should I get a 42? Or due to the "roomy" fit of the classic Alaska cut, would a 40 work? Thanks

I cannot say on fit, but one can rarely go wrong with Filson. Check out Empire Canvas too.

Like Bob W, a lot of my clothes have "shrank" with age.... The older I have gotten, my body weight has increased over the years.

If you plan to wear your Filson Mackinaw Cruiser for a long time you might want to consider that.

When I wore a younger man's clothes, one served me well.

Where I now live it's not cold enough to justify the thing.

I have bought and sold quite a bit of Filson gear, mostly on ebay but some direct from Filson and their dealers, and have found Filson's sizes to be all over the place which led to most of the selling part. I'm not talking about the difference between Alaska Fit and Seattle Fit, the difference in made in China and made in the USA or the difference between vintage or new either, although the older stuff seems more consistent with sizing. I'm talking about the same style or similar style garments having noticeable differences in measurements. The Alaska Fit outerwear sometimes has more extra room in the belly than in the chest & shoulders so allows more room for layering with a vest than anything else.

If buying directly from Filson I would call and talk to them about your specific measurements and your typical layering. They are very good about returns & exchanges so no worry about getting stuck with something that doesn't work for you. You can generally pick up clean Filson outerwear on ebay for about half of retail and most sellers are more than happy to provide you with any measurements you want.

There's a large outdoor store near me that carries Filson. You might check to see if there's someplace you can buy one off the rack and be sure of the fit. I have a Mackinaw by Filson that was gifted to me, but there's no size label in it. It's a great coat. I wish it had a hood though. I also have a Mackinaw vest that's a dandy.

Thank you all for the input. I've got one inbound that should arrive in a few days. I'll let you know how it goes when it arrives. And I start checking online auction sites if the size is wrong (I'll actually have a reference point) on this one.

GreT coat. My only complaint on wool is its heavy and in high winds you should have a wind proof shirt or vest under it. But I'm talking extreme wind and cold. Love wool and I have all kinds of it. ll beans is very nice for the money. Not us made but very high quality and priced reasonable.

Got my Mackinaw on Friday, just in time for some cold (for Kentucy anyway) weather this week. It was 8F this morning when I took the kids to school. I love this coat so far. It's warm, comfortable, and I really like the classic style. My wife kind of rolled her eyes when I showed her pictures of what I wanted, but thought the black/gray plaid was "cool" so that's what I'm wearing.
