Filson, since 1897. Tin cloth, Shelter Cloth.

How good is this stuff and does it warrant the price tag? I know very little about this company so give me the low down on it.

If its that good I might be able to market some of it in Europe.

What other brands do you trust?

Top quality. I wore a Filson Cruiser to rags (my wife called it my 'Filthy Cruiser'). Rain, bush and briar proof. Great hats, too. Ideal for the rainy west coast. Their pants are terrific, too. Stiff, but you'll get used to them once they're broken in.

Definitely the closest thing to indestructible this side of plate mail (and oil cloth won't rust). Filson stuff is "heirloom quality," the kind of clothes you buy when you're young, and that you can pass on to your kids.

great stuff, tough as nails

clothing tends to be on the "heavy" side

make great accesories as well.

I agree with everything said above.
However, look into Lewis Creek waxed cotton clothing.
It's a little more stylish, and finished nicer.

I like my shelter cloth hat. If I had the money, I'd buy one of just about everything they make. I'm really jonesing for one of their tin cloth coats with a wool liner.

I get Filson catalogs often and drool all over the place. There
are two reasons that I don't buy any. They cost more than I can
afford and they last to long. If you're young and will not change
in size then they are an excellent "investment ". If you change
in size, as most of us do as we age, then they are not a good
"investment". At my age I'd never get the value out of the cost
of Filson.

How 'bout the Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser coat.
I don't think you'd ever have to worry about keeping warm or buying another coat. Neither would your eldest son!

I have a Filson shelter cloth coat. It is a rainproof shell that is oversized to allow you to wear MANY layers underneath. I wear it as my primary non-work coat. I live in SF where it rains from late Fall through early Spring, so it doesn't get the workout it might in some places, but I also wear it in snow country with three layers underneath, and it is still comfortable to move about in.

I also have a Filson briefcase. After about 9 months of daily use, the defective zipper cut through the cloth. I sent it back and it was replace with new briefcase, no questions asked.

If I had the money, I would get a satchel and a duffle from them as well.

their stuff had better be good.

i get the catalog, and wish i had the money to spend on some of their clothes...very nice stuff...was looking for winter coats, only problem fer me is im broke :(

Filson makes the best heavy duty stuff available. I got a Double Mackinaw Cruiser last spring at a big discount, and the thing is bombproof. It was -10F this AM, and I was comfy - and stylish. I expect that my oldest son will wear it some day.

Filson is what Carhartts want to be when they grow up.

My granddad wears mostly Filson clothes. He's the same size he was when he fought in WWII. I think he's still wearing the same clothes he bought when he got out of the service. They hold up to everything.

i just bought one of their virgin wool vests and its extremely well made.....tough as nails as warm as can be.....very functional style and will probably be handed down to my kid someday.....this is my first piece of filson and i plan to pick up some more....i was very impressed....feverdoc

Hey Dave, where did you get a discount on Filson stuff? I've checked their website occasionally, and I get their catalog, but I've never seen a sale.

I ordered a shelter cloth coat and returned it. It's well made, but I don't like the waxy feeling of the cloth. It left a waxy residue on my hands and felt like it was slightly damp all the time.

Burke, I bought the coat at a local store. For some reason they didn't want to carry the thing all summer (everybody switches to fly rods and waders), so they did 50% off in May. I waited.

I own a pair of Filsons waxed chaps and have used them for grouse and duck hunting for the last three years. They are great, they protect my legs from briars and also keep them very dry. I will never be without a pair! The downside is how expensive Filson products are, from my point of view they are worth it if you are hard on clothing. I doubt I will ever have to replace my chaps.

WOW, thanks guys; looks like a big thumbs up.

If they are high cost in the US, then they will be very expensive in the UK. It will have to be a niche marketing kind of thing.

The dry finish looks smart. Does anyone know has well it keeps its looks. I don't mind warn and scruffy but not mangey, especially when you have stuff for a long time. Any thougts?

I'll be looking into Lewis Creek stuff. Thanks. Anyone else that produces some thing high quality, can't find anywhere else, kinda stuff - and Europeans might swallow. We are not talking Honolulu floresent shirts now :D Idea's welcome.

I'm also hoping to go to the Shot Show Ls Vagas. Will I see manufacturers and wholesalers there or just Outfitters; Trade as well as retailers? Is this the show to go to or is there a better trade show?

I have the double tin cloth pants and I think the damn things would stop a .22! Excellent for really thorny brush.

I have a friend who attends the SHOT Show and he tells me that it is mainly manufacturers/distributors showing products to retailers. They will be the visitors. As I understand it, the show is not open to the public. I don't think there are a lot of outfitters.
