Greetings all,

Anybody been using any type of filter straw? I'm looking at an Outdoor Products unit at Wallyworld for about $14.

I know it won't do much/anything with bacteria/microbes etc, but if it could help filter out some contaminents/sediments (which might be present even after boiling), it might be worth stuffing along side the water canteen (ie its alot more compact that most of the pump/filter devices)...the basic idea has some merit to it...

I have a couple in the emergency kit, I'll have to wait to find out if they work.

Overall reviews are good for these. I bought mine from the online "A" .com

I kept one of these in an emergency kit for a couple of years. The only time I tried to use it, it was terrible. I was drinking pretty clean (ie debris-feee) water from a mountain stream, and I was practically purple in the face because I had to suck so hard. I'm glad it wasn't a real emergency. Straw went in the bin. Shows the importance of testing emergency kit in advance.

Did you first take it out of the plastic wrap? :D

Beat me to it.;)

That being said, its a good point to consider...at $14, I can probably afford to buy one and try it out.

I used one before, and it wasn't that hard to get water through it. Can't remember which one it was, though. I have a couple of them spread throughout a couple of kits.

I researched this issue last year. I settled on the Seychelles Advanced Purifier straw. Precisely because it is a puifier, not a filter and can handle removal of viruses many common chemicals likely to be in polluted water. Check them out.

I have a couple ones made by aquamiri they actually do remove 99.9% of harmful bacteria along with sediment and other stuff you don't want to drink. I have used it a few times and never had a problem sucking water threw it, it flowed quite freely. Just make sure before you use it to drink you flush it a few times to get the black dust out of it. It will probably tell you on the directions of the straw but incase you just open it and go to town not reading them, you do need to flush them.

I have the same, and ditto.
